Picked up a new 686 from the store last week. Canted barrel, underlug doesn't meet the frame, (a big gap) and scratches on muzzle and barrel from where they tried to torque the barrel back into position.

WTH is going on at Smith and Wesson? sending her back with instructions to either make it right (12:00 barrel) or send me a new gun.

Good god.

Doesnt anybody ever look over their guns when they go to the store to pick them up anymore or do we just put up random posts online complaining about the company? My guess is the latter...

Well, to be honest, I did. I didn't see it at first because I picked her up on my lunch hour. This isn't a random post, why is S&W putting out garbage like this?

I'd have to almost bet that the assembly spec. on barrel installation is torque not aesthetics thus the issue. There must be enough variance in barrel thread cut that most line up but some don't

GOOD FOR YOU, Laker2004 ! ! ! THERE IS NO WAY THAT A REVOLVER LIKE THAT IS ACCEPTABLE. S&W NEEDS TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEMS IN THEIR ASSEMBLY PROCESS, AND THEIR OBVIOUS LACK OF QUALITY CONTROL…..

I call troll.

New member, five posts with two in this thread, just purchased two brand new pistols that looked like they were dragged behind a truck, and got $400 trade in on a Glock toward a 5" pre-lock 629 priced at $729.

No pictures.

If I'm wrong, I apologize, but it doesn't look good.

^^^ this ^^^ Took the words right outa my mouth.

I have also posted about this issue a few times in the last few months. I have been searching for a new 686, either 2.5" or 3" barrel, Talo or standard model.

I have found (and inspected) 11 of them at local stores in the metro-Phoenix area. Every one of the 11 new guns either had a canted barrel or a scratched up frame. Only about 4 of the 11 had a straight barrel, unfortunately, each of those 4 had dings/scratches in the frame. Of the 2 Talo models that were included in the 11 that I inspected, one had a straight barrel with a scratched frame, the other one had an unblemished frame with a canted barrel.

I would never order one of these online. I will only buy one locally after I can inspect it before purchase.

In the past 12 months I've purchased 2 686 revolvers. One a 5 inch performance center, and one a 3 inch model. I'm very pleased with both.

My latest new revolver a 686 4 inch. Flawless but I really wanted an older one. $635 nib. Hard to pass up and I shot lots of 158gr 357 thru it this weekend. Soon forgot about the hole and transfer bar. Since I keep not trade I'm sure it'll be around for awhile. Of course an older one is on the radar.

I agree.

Now I have really haven't bought any new S&Ws but I do see them in the store and I do examine them.

Haven't found any of those lemons myself.

I have bought several new S&W revolvers in the last three years, and they have all been in great shape, except my latest, a 3 inch M686 TALO 357 has a .009 inch BC gap. I understand that is within spec, but I would prefer about half of that. It does shoot well though. The barrels have all been properly aligned, as close as I can tell by eye. I don't know of any way to actually measure the amount of "cant", or what the spec would be. The front sight blade lines up with the rear notch, with a critical look.
One of the things I like about the new 2 piece barrels on the M66 and M69 is that the front sight alignment does not depend on barrel tightening torque. Hoping they will make a 3 inch M66-8. Would trade the new M686 for it.

Best,
Rick
