New 686 condition question

Hello all, I am new to the forum and just recently purchased a 686. My question is it normal to receive a new 686 with pretty defined drag lines on the cylinder? I tried to take a picture to show it but the flash keeps making it hard to get a decent one. I understand the whole test firing but this looks a little much to me (drag lines). I have a gp100 that has been fired some and it doesnt seem the line shows as much. I just am not sure whether I should contact the dealer or just live with it. I did purchase it as collection item to give my son one day. Any thoughts?

Understand your concern, but it does not seem excessive to me. The bolt notches that I can see do not seem marred. It has been in the display case and handled. Yes, it's been cycled and dry-fired some, but it's still a NIB. If you placed a special order for it, then I would take it up with the dealer.

I Hate Drag lines!

I don't think it's unusual but annoying! On my new 686 & 617,
I masked off the frame & side of the cylinder only leaving the
cylinder stop sticking out. Then with 2000 grit paper I dressed
very lightly the edges and top of the stop where it would contact
the cylinder and then I polished it abit with
Mother's Mag & Aluminum polish. Go lightly!
Mine still have the scratch, but you almost have to look for it!

I purchased it through an online vendor and it was transferred to my FFL. I just was expecting something a little different. (less drag lines) Seems like I may have to deal with it.

Sorry to see your issue with a brand new gun. This is why I am VERY reluctant (read: almost never) interested in buying online. Had 3 disappointments...no more. Regards, Ed

I read a letter written by a very high ranking officer at S&W written many years ago-concerning the drag line and he basically said it is an unavoidable nature of the design thing and we must live with it. I do not remember his name, but I`m sure one of our historically able members will . I also think the recipient of the letter was Skeeter Skelton?
Anyway it was interesting , just thought you`d like to know, so don't worry and enjoy your fine revolver. Jack

I bought a NIB 629 from a local dealer and it looked very similar to your 686. I remember thinking the same thing but I'm pretty convinced that's the way they come.
