New 686 performance center

I had my FFL order one in for me and honestly I am disappointed. I am so disappointed that I plan on a youtube review of it.

I ordered the 686 with 4" barrel. Cost was exactly the same as my 686 SSR cost me. Between the two the SSR is the better gun out of the box. I have modified mine a bit and shaved the hammer, added springs, and replaced the front sight.

My thoughts on this gun are is if you have to have one for your Performance Center 686 collection then rock on. Otherwise skip it....

Right now the only up side is S&W is offering $50 prepaid CC with the purchase of a new gun. That should put me into the $750 range for this gun. They still owe me magazines etc for my last Perf Center Purchase.

How sad. Love to see that review when you post it. I am thankful for buying the SSR several years ago. It is my best revolver with pride of ownership off the scale. Going to have to get back to thinking about the 627 or 327 models.

Let me jump the gun here on Wednesday:

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!

I ordered a SDM sight to replace the factory front sight. I have a Dawson on my SSR and liked it but I was already ordering some reloading stuff from midway and threw it in. So far it has helped with my disappointment in this gun but it is what it is. There were/are metal flakes/shards where the barrel meets the frame and one of them was binding up the cylinder when closed. I am done with work for the year so I am going to try to get some love for this revo. I have a bobbed apex hammer I was thinking about throwing on it and ditching the extended latch.

Also for a side note I won a 586 PC 3" on GB yesterday for $567 so its looking up! Also Smith's $50 prepaid arrived for this gun yesterday.

So..... After reading all the above replies, I'm still leaning towards the SSR version. I did get to "paw" a 5" model yesterday at my LGS and it was nice. Any reason why I should reconsider not buy an SSR instead? Not going to compete with either model, just for my own enjoyment. Thanks in advance for the honest opinions and Merry Christmas!! Ron

As I posted above, my finest modern era revolver is my 686SSR. Nuff said. A problem with the strain screw loosening under firing, but my gunsmith cured that with a drop of LocTite. I do not compete either, unless you deem pie plates with full mag loads at 7-10 yards to be competition. I do. Factory grips changed out right away, but plenty of RB-K/L grips out there.

I would, however, recommend a careful inspection at the LGS of any firearm produced nowadays before buying. There are threads here (also on YouTube?) of what to look for. And a Merry Christmas to you, Ron!!

Just brought my new one home Friday. All I' ve done is look and hold so far. I like the looks though. Nice trigger.

I have one and tested it

I have the 4" 686 PC and my friend has the standard 686. I have replaced the orange front site with a hi viz in green. We tested each gun side by side shooting 6 rounds with one then 6 with the other, over and over. Our observations are: the PC is faster and has a noticeably smoother trigger. We could stage the trigger in double action with the PC but not as easily with the regular. The balance is different. it's more centered with the PC, more weight forward with the regular. They both shoot flawlessly and eat everything we could put through them. The differences are not huge, but they are noticeable.
