New 686 plus owner

As of March 1st I am the proud owner of the 4 inch model. Weather and my job have stopped me from shooting it so far. It has an enhanced trigger from the performance center, the Davidsons Gallery of Guns version. It is smooth and its double action trigger pull is better than my python. (never thought I would say that) I have a small question to ask, the trigger and the hammer do not have the high polishing as the rest of the gun. Almost all of the pictures on the S&W web site show the same for the stainless guns. I look forward for your input, thanks in advance.

Depending on the revision, the hammer and trigger are probably MIM (metal injection molding)

It sounds like case hardening but others will be able to answer much more comprehensively.

I also just recently bought a new 668 Plus. Yes, the trigger and hammer have the "dirty looking" case hardened treatment, on what are probably MIM parts. I don't know if it is a true case-hardened treatment or a "faux" application to make it look case-hardened.

I'm also a new owner of a brandnew 686-4 Plus, wondering about the dirty look trigger and hammer. The sales person told me that is the new way revolvers come from S&W, and that was it. Maybe they have been harden with a different coating so they last longer....

I cleaned my dark, case-hardened trigger and hammer up a bit with the Lead-Away cloth I use for the cylinder. Not a match to the frame, but definitely better. Only took a couple of minutes, rubbing it between my fingers.

I actually do the opposite. I use bluing remover on the hammers and complete the bluing on the triggers. I like the black triggers as they bring the black sights in, aesthetically speaking.

Although its not stainless my four inch 586 plus is a good one. The MIM and the hole in side so far have not proved troublesome. The one problem other than the stocks is I have a hard time remembering that seventh trigger pull available! I'm quite sure you will enjoy yours.

I thought so too! But then i remembered the combat magnums have blackened controls

I have a 2014 vintage 686+ and I am fine with the funky look of the trigger. Not sure what they are doing, but it's fine. Interesting idea about taking the Lead-Away cloth to it. Not sure I will do that, but interesting idea.
The 686+ 4" sure does shoot well!

My input is...you acquired a fine firearm. Yes there is the internal lock,the MIM and these things we may or may not want. Life ain't perfect...but you bought a darn accurate gun. Congratulations...I've had the 686 for pretty close to 25 years and she's been home for; well about 25 years. She's a better shooter than me and not for sale...

Oh BTW the plus thing makes me jealous...but I'll get past it.

I polished mine with Mother's. I like to shoot it and look at it.
