Just bought a NIB M&P 9 Full Size and the backstrap tool wont turn the 1/4 turn to release. Am I doing something obviously wrong? I re-read the manual to double check and my 9c turns very easily... Also the trigger on this one is much heavier than the 9c, I hope it breaks in.

It took me a good while to get mine out when it was new. I just worked it side to side until it loosened up.

Mine is very tight, too. I had a hard time removing it today, but once it was out I sprayed a little silicone lube on it so maybe next time it will be easier.

Yes, the new fit is pretty tight. Just don't be a wingnut like I was and force it. That little plastic nubbin rubbed right off and had to replace the whole thing. At least it was cheap.

This thing wont budge. I'm been at it for about 15 minutes. it wont move more than 5 degrees in either direction. Any tips? I've been a wigglin'!

finally got it. after about 20 minutes of wiggling and sore thumbs i got it out. man that thing was a booger!

That is probably the only feature I dislike about the m&p line. I've seen guys t my lgs just force it (straight out),and it made me cringe a little knowing that they were probably damaging their inventory. I said something helpful and of course they ignored it because know-it-alls I'm sure tell them stuff all the time.

I've had a number of M&P pistols, both FS and compact, and it seems that the FS back strap pins are always difficult to remove at first.

What I do is take a pair of pliers, pad the jaws, and use the pliers to carefully apply some force/leverage to get it to turn. I turn it slowly and carefully, and don't force it...I can get it to move this way when I can't just using my fingers.

The good news is that once you pick the backstrap you like, you probably will never need to remove that pin again. They seem to be insanely tight....

About the trigger.... Unless you bought the Massachusetts-compliant gun, it should ease up a little bit. If you still don't like it after a few hundred rounds, check out the Apex DCAEK (and RAM) kits. The DCAEK will really improve the trigger, and kill the MA-compliant thing, too....

Enjoy the new gun, too!

Regards,

I used liquid rubber (in a can) you can use it to coat handles like pliers, side cutters. I just dipped the plier tips in it a couple times and it works great. Easy to re-coat if it wears off. Found quite a few things that need to be loosened and not get scratched doing it. Those back strap pins can be a bear to get out.

Thx for the comments. I not believe its MA compliant as it has no mag safer and has 17rnd mags.

I went through the same drill at my LGS when I picked my FS 9mm. Felt like a total wuss for a full minute until the sales guy saw what happening and came to my rescue. He said those tools often arrive "like Excalibur in the rock" from the factory. He then placed the bottom of an empty mag against the flat side of the inserted tool (no mag in pistol) and turned it easily while gripping the pistol in his other hand. After the tool was turned a quarter turn he flipped the empty mag around and put the bottom lip of the mag under the extended part of the tool and popped it out - think bottle opener motion. Whole operation took all of three seconds.

Levers...proven technology that are easy on the fingers and the ego.

Hope this helps.
