Got my wife a smaller cc. She was carrying a 40 cal 96A Beretta but pretty large for her. Went to the range yesterday for first shooting- frustrated that there were so many issues with the new 9mm. Our 40's have never miss fired and yesterday was discouraging. The gun jammed at least once every other magazine... shot about 100'rounds and the slide got easier to pull but only made through 2 magazines without a jam - any advice would be appreciated...

If you used all the same brand ammo, try a different brand and see if it makes any difference.

What kind of jam are you having? Was it a failure to feed, failure to extract, or a failure to eject?
Also, clean the gun thoroughly (the do fire a round at least at the factory before it goes out to sell), and lube it before shooting again (some of those small guns can be very sensitive to under-lubrication).

I wouldn't spend much of my money trying different ammo.
I'm not in favor of dumping money into a bunch of ammo trying to fix these problems.
If you cleaned and lubed the pistol before shooting it, I'd give Smith a call.
If you didn't clean and lube it, do so and try again.

They should lube at the factory, but maybe not enough (jimmy the oil guy sneezed and one got by him) and/or maybe whatever they used migrated out of the gun.
Mostly, I've bought used guns, but I know CZ, for example, sends their guns out in a bag of oil! It's amazing. But from my experience, the small single stacks (Kahr, Keltec and Beretta) have all prefered to run a tad wet, the keltec especially.
Anyway, if it's a new gun I would clean it, lube it, try it again, then if it's still not feeding, send it back to S&W for repair. They'll fix it.
Other than the feeding issues, how does your wife like it?
She liked the gun - just not the FTL and the breach staying open. She never experienced any failure ever with either of our 40 Beretta 96A. It was good training for her though - she could identify the failure to load and learned that a quick slap in the butt would get one in the chamber and she could fire. Spooked her at first but when I told her it could happen to any handgun, she should train for it. She got much quicker identifying and immediately slapping and firing

a slap in the butt fixed it? it sounds like a failure to return to battery. that can happen in the first few hundred rounds as the recoil spring is too stiff. that should wear in with shooting.

When I brought my PC shield home it was coated in a "oil" if you would call it that. More like a heavy sticky oil. I always clean and lube my new firearms prior to shooting. Amazed some times how dirty they are but they do fire them prior to boxing them up.
That being said my PC shield went to the range one time and has been back at S&W for about 5 weeks due to a barrel wear issue. When I called S&W to see if it was normal they said no and send it in. They are stating currently the turn around time is 4-5 weeks so hopefully it get sent home soon.
My normal shield I picked up this last weekend was heavily coated in oil but not sticky. I already cleaned it but it hasn't been fired yet.

Yeah, they lube guns, but some of the stuff they put on the is a sticky preservative, kind of like old cosmoline, but nearly invisible. You can feel it, though.

I was surprised to see how "dry" the pistol was when I took it apart to clean.... lubed well and my Mrs. took it to the range yesterday. She was by herself cause I'm too cheap to pay $20 just to watch in the stall. Anyway it was good to see her by herself with her new gun. Watched it on the store camera. She still had 2 fail to feed midway through 2 magazines - she went through 12 of them...and 4 fail to load on initial rack. She believes those were her fault for not pulling completely back. Much better but I don't like any FTF - Cleaned and lubed again and left the magazines full in the case and the gun racked back in the case. Hoping things will loosen up a bit until she shoots again. She also thinks operator error with putting the magazines in - they are a bit tight... I'll work them in and out this week as well as rack a bunch of rounds through to help it get looser loading

the failure to strip a round is USUALLY operator error. the shield 9mm slide is freaking TIGHT when brand new. I have 2 shield 9mm's (or had, the on with safety went to my mother as I wanted the safetyless) and BOTH did that a handful of times in the first few hundred round. It was always because I tried to rack the slide when it wasn't fully locked back. the recoil spring really needs time to take a set before you don't short stroke it
Hey me and my wife bothe have had 9mm shields I have slung every kind of ammo from cheap stufff reloads without any problems except. Working up a load when reloading I have had the slide not stay open on last round but that was so too light of a load on the reloads or my not holding a good firm grip on gun. I have heard if you don't hold a good grip and let gun get sloppy the slide may not function properly not sure if it's true but have heard this is a problem on some guns. But as for us no hiccups out of our 2 9mm shields. I would talk to S&w and get them to check it out.
