Yesterday I pickup my new M&P 9mm Shield. Got it home and started field stripping it, I pushed the yellow sear deactivation lever down and it falls off and out through the grip. Searched other forums and found that it's happened to others. I called S&W and they are sending me a return label to send it back to them. The part that sucks is that S&W is on vacation for the 1st 2 weeks of Aug. So I probably won't see my new Shield until September. I'm kinda bummed :(

That stinks but they will make it right.

Make sure you check it out as much as you can for other defects before sending it in. I found that my front sight was way to the right but I didn't want to send it in just for that. My LGS fixed it for free the same day.

Sorry to hear about the problem. If you bought it from a local store I would try to return it.

JFR, the front sight on my shield looked exactly the same. Took it to a gunsmith and he buggered up the sight, I had to send it back to S&W to get it fixed, the sight is still somewhat mangled but at least it's properly centered.

Unfortunately I bought it on Gun Broker, so I will be sending to S&W.

Yup, That's what I would do also.

Because S&W was shutting down for 2 weeks I made sure that my LGS/Range had the correct pusher and that the armorer had worked on the tight shield sites before. This wasn't even where I made the purchase from, they told me that their sight tool was broke.

The LGS who centered it, at no charge, (Shoot Straight in FL) and did great work. I dropped it off at 12am, they said it will be a few days, they called me in 3 hours and said it was done.

Some who have sent off a new firearm to Smith for issues have reported getting a few mags back with it upon return. Maybe you'll be one of them.

Good luck.

What the h@ll is going on with Shield QC of late?
Disgraceful.
Especially to us owners of perfect ones bought in mid 2012.

Shoot Straight's great, aren't they? Mine's in Ft. Myers.

They did throw in a free 7 rnd mag. when repairing my front sight but I was a little surprised they didn't replace the mangled up sight.

I'd put a few hundred rounds through it before sending it back.

When you do send it back, don't send a mag with it. ;)

.

That really stinks, man. I am sure they'll hook you up with some something for your troubles. I've heard of them dropping an extra mag in the return box on occasion.

Is the lever broken or is a pin missing? You could just replace it yourself and avoid the wait.

Looks like the pin is missing. I thought about doing it myself, but since it's a brand new gun, i'll let them do it.

Since it's going to them anyway I'd be to tempted to tear it all the way down for a learning experience.

It's never wrong to let the manufacturer fix a defective product. Especially if it's new. However, as surprising as it sounds, the manufacturer doesn't always get it right. This should be obvious from your gun's current condition.

I'm really stunned that it's missing that pin. How could they test fire it without it? There's a spring in there as well. It would be hard to hold all that together and insert the sear housing without that pin.

JFR is right and this is a great opportunity to learn about the inner workings of the gun.

It has been discussed in other threads on this forum that dealers do not take back defective guns. The fine print on the back of the bill states that the buyer must return the gun to the mfr should there be a defect. Should the dealer take back the gun, send it out for warranty repair, & wait until it comes back, they would have to sell it as a used gun because it was sold to somebody else, thus causing the dealer to lose money. Also, I don't know of any dealer that would have an extra Shield laying around that they would "swap out". Of course there might be the odd exception for customers who spend loads of cash at their favorite store, but I wouldn't count on any LGS taking back a defective gun, & swapping it out for a new one. GARY

I returned my Colt Delta Elite because it malfunctioned on every magazine. They gave me my money back and I immediately bought a Dan Wesson 715T. Best gun purchase I've ever made.
