Hi There,

At the same auction, I purchased a 2nd model Schofield that
has had its barrel shortened to 5-1/16" and has the "W.F. &
CO'S. EX." stamp. As you can see, it has been re-blued and
the stocks have been sanded enough to remove the cartouche.

I bought it because it looked so nice. I like that soft blue, with
silver edges and walnut. There is errosion in the bore but it is
shallow and rifling is good. It should make a fun shooter.

Take a look at the pics and tell me what you think.

Cheers!
Webb

Late contract

Thanks for posting

This is likely a late small contract from the first Wells Fargo purchased Schofields that I suspect went South from the Chicago distribution office. Likely late 1880’s. My study of Express guns many of the Southern guns had oversized numbers.

I only have about 10 in my survey so it was a smaller contract.

They all have the oversized stamped property numbers on the barrel.

1st and 2nd confirmed contracts I have over 150 documented from early 1880’s and very early 1890’s.

By the mid 1890’s the Express Company’s (American and Wells Fargo) were phasing out the then obsolete Schofields and replacing them with Colt lightnings and top-break 38’s. This is proven from both Express records that I have and factory records that support a very steady flow of guns for the next 15+years.

Nice Schofield!
I have no 1534, also with large number, is my collection. The number 3 looks identical. Probably from the same contract.

Absolutely beautiful. I had a 3 digit 1st model cousin that someone unfortunately ground off all of the express company markings before refinishing it. It was still fun to shoot and drew more than it's fair share of attention. Great find and thanks for sharing.
