New barrel

Hello all, has anyone had a new barrel put in their 15-22. I had a small accident with mine. Was in my tree climber, while coming down the sling came loose and the rifle fell about 20' and with my luck it hit a rock wall. There is obvious damage to the barrel and hand guard. Hand guard is ok, just small scratches but the barrel as large marks near the muzzle.
I know I can send it to S&W but if I am going to spend money mite as well get a good barrel. My baby is hurt and I need to get her well :)
 
If it's just cosmetic and getting the new barrel from Smith and Wesson is out of the question... put a shroud on it... problem solved... just an idea.
 
Cut it down and either permanently pin a FH on it, or cut it down and SBR it.

Easy answer - talk to S&W's customer service if the barrel is actually bent.

If it cosmetic, why bother? If it really bothers you, polish out the scratches and put some cold black on them.

Any firearms that are actually used will accumulate "character" in the form of scratches. That's just part of firearm life. Even my $2,500 custom M1 has character marks. :)
 
If it is not noticeably bent then just shoot it to confirm... If it is still grouping like it was just buff/blue the scratches out or install a barrel shroud...now the rifle is "Truly" yours. Good Luck!
 
How did it land? From what you described it sounds like it landed muzzle first. Are there any cracks in the upper receiver, like say around where the barrel interfaces with the upper? Does the barrel seem loose? Is the barrel bent at all? Also, before you try shooting it again, make sure the barrel isn't obstructed. Any visible damage to the bolt?

I'm sure if you called S&W the first question they would ask you would be something like: "Is the rock wall okay?"
 
or you can just order a new barrel from S&W, i just ordered a threaded version. its on back order, but atleast you can have them shipped to your house if need be.

im not home right now so i dont have the part number.. but if u take a look back a few threads.... i updated a parts number thread a couple days ago, with the number of the barrel and the ejector.... both shipped i think was $102...
 
Unless the OP has experience removing and reinstalling the barrel, I'd just send it to S&W and let them do the work. They might cover it under warranty. Even if S&W doesn't, it saves him the cost of a barrel vice, wrench, besides giving him the certainty that it will be done correctly. It will also let S&W check for a cracked lower or other damage that might not be discernible to an untrained eye.

I didn't think S&W was selling parts to the public like that yet, oh well, learn something everyday
 
Thanks guys, I don't see any receiver or bolt damage. It landed on a angle, barrel hit wall then but hit ground. No barrel obstructions. I can live with the damage if it shoots. Guess I will have to shoot it some place quiet and alone so no one will hear me cursing if its Damaged.
Can't SBR it because I live in a state that's thinks the people are not smart enough to Handel that. FU New York gun laws.
If only I had some C-4 a cap and some det cord I could get some payback on that communist rock wall :)
Do you think people will laugh if I bubble wrap my rifle and add a parachute.
 
Yeah, NYS gun laws suck. Good luck testing it. Hopefully it shoots and operates fine. Be sure to wear eye protection! Let us know how it turns out. We will all be interested to hear how the rifle fared a 20' drop and confrontation with a rock wall.
 
I will let you guys know how it shoots. I mite just mite be a tiny bit scared to pull the trigger. I am not pretty but don't want to get any uglier. This is why I have shooters and safe queens. Cheep shooters and very expensive, never leave the the house, $ 6,000$ to scared to damage or I am fuc_ed, safe queens.:)

Unless there is an obvious kink or bend in the barrel, you should have nothing to worry about. Worst case, I believe, is it will have changed the POI, and may also be less consistent, if it really is bent some.

Naturally, you've looked carefully down the barrel and don't see any anomaly, right? :o
 
You figure out a miniature parachute pack that clips on the Picatinny with a little static line to loop around your wrist and I guarantee somebody will buy it!
Seriously, try a laser boresighter that aligns inside the chamber (I know, hard to find; might have to improvise) and see what that reveals about the trueness of the barrel. Do it with the upper dismounted and held in a vise (carefully!) holding a piece of white paper very close to the muzzle or against the flash hider and observe from the back of the paper where the laser dot is in relation to the shadow of the muzzle. If it centers, you should be okay but test firing involving immobilization of the rifle (again, improvise) and a long string should tell you all you might need to know. You may have to replace the flash hider if the basket is damaged but that is easy-peasy. Good luck!
 
You can improvise a Ransom rest setup. String to pull trigger.

Unless you have lead weights attached to your rails I doubt there is enough energy in a dropped 15-22 to damage the barrel.
 
Have not been able to get to the range because of Sandy. When I can get there I will post my results....I hope......thanks everyone...
 
I didn't realize that a 15-22 barrel would be this inexpensive. I am thinking of buying one that I could have cut down in size.
