Maybe I missed it, sorry if already discussed. Bought a gun yesterday and my dealer has a new form. In section 10a you have to check if you are, or are not, hispanic or latino. Then you check ethnicity like before in next section. Anybody else get this? I'm sure this will help reduce crime.

I filled one out on Monday and skipped right over that new question. The dealer pointed it out to me. It's kind of interesting, all the iterations of this form I've filled out since the '80s - would make a neat collection, actually.

Yep just rolled over. Here's the weird thing though: the NICS check fields didn't change. That's important b/c dealers don't send the 4473 info anywhere so what's on the form only helps them if they do a trace. NICS already has a race field (optional, I don't fill it in) that includes Latino as an option.

So honestly I'm not sure what they're accomplishing. NICS may change at some point to match the 4473 changes but I'm not sure where it adds any information value to what they already do.

Effective 09-07 there is a new 4473. The most important change to it is question 11.l and 12. According to the letter sent to all FFL's with the new 4473:

" DOJ determined that the prohibition imposed on certain nonimmigrant aliens from receiving or possessing firearms or ammunition that have a connection to interstate commerce does not extend to all nonimmigrant aliens present in the United States but only extends to aliens who were admitted to the United States under a nonimmigrant visa"

Well,,that explains it...
Now I can stop wondering and I don't have to bother opening the package.

So...how else are non-immigrant aliens admitted into the US without a non-immigrant visa? A list would be handy.

Well Andy, they could have just sneaked in. I hear it happens :p

Full instructions defined clear as mud are on page 5 of the 4473.

Not surprised that I am confused by a givament form:) I went to merriam webster to see definitions of race and ethnicity. They overlap and each uses the other as a synonym. It has one definition of race as "a class or kind of people unified by shared interests, habits, or characteristics". Soooo.. we here on S&W forum must be a "Race" of people. May have to start checking "other":)

Why are the race and ethnicity questions even asked when you buy a gun?

What if someone was embarrassed by their race or ethnicity, they should not be required to say in order to exercise a Constitutional right.

What is Tiger Woods supposed todo? (Serious question)

This is a quote from the Tiger Woods Wikipedia page:

Earl, a retired United States Army lieutenant colonel and Vietnam War veteran, was of mixed African American, Chinese and Native American ancestry. Kultida (née Punsawad), originally from Thailand, is of mixed Thai, Chinese, and Dutch ancestry. This makes Woods himself one-quarter Chinese, one-quarter Thai, one-quarter African American, one-eighth Native American, and one-eighth Dutch. He refers to his ethnic make-up as “Cablinasian” (a syllabic abbreviation he coined from Caucasian, Black, (American) Indian, and Asian).

BTW, it sounds like Earl Woods, Tiger's father, could appropriately check of boxes for:

American
Combat Veteran
Tough Cookie (Special Forces in Vietnam)
Patriot
Father

I bought a gun last Thursday 7/6 and THE QUESTION wasn't on the form. Today I bought another 7/11 (I know I know:D ...I can't stop!) Anyway, there it was. My LGS pointed it out because The People on the other end of the phone have been asking specifically what that line says.. I told him I thought it was illegal to ask that question like that....but I answered it anyway because I had already bought the gun from someone on this forum and he was just doing the transfer.
Otherwise, I would have walked out and never bought another firearm from a dealer again::rolleyes: Well....maybe just one more;)
In all seriousness I am not sure I understand the usefulness or the right for single out a people group.
Mike

Maybe they are trying to find some of the guns that went across the border a couple of years ago. Would this question narrow the search?

Not having read the entire form prior to this, is question 19 regarding the gun show new?

I bought a gun today, at a shop I have been to many times, and as usual I just zipped through the form from memory without paying any attention to it, and then when I handed it to the cashier he handed it back to me with a grin and said, "Gotcha!"

I'm sure this significant step will heal our economy, address the health care issue, add jobs, and lower our national debt. I mean, that's what the government should be worrying about right now...innit?

I was in my LGS 2 weeks ago when he got the supply in the mail. He had just received a batch of 500 (previous) forms he had ordered, which went into the trash. More Gov't cost effectiveness at work. Effective immediately, don't use any old forms!!!!!

What about question #6 Gender??

How about those transgender folks out there? How do they answer? Good enough for the Ms Universe Pageant.

Dealers in my area all use computers. You enter your own info on a lap top. That’s kind of hard for me :D I have real big hands, been told that good thing my vocation in life was not to be a gynecologist!

I don't think a person who is so confused that he or she doesn't know what gender he or she is should be allowed to buy a gun... :p
