Either of the SUV's you mentioned should serve you well. I have one the same size, a 2012 KIA Sportage Turbo. This size vehicle is the best combination of ease of entry and egress, storage capacity and economy, IMO.
I would not mind a new Ford Ranger pickup but I detest the engine on/off while driving and the fact that you have to turn it off every time you get in the truck if you don't want it. Besides, I will probably be driving my Sportage until Mom is gone any way. It is quite easy for her to get in and out of and I only have 24,000 on it so far.
