New Colt 1911 9mm's full size and Commander on shelves..

Within the last week, an influx of Colt 9mm 1911's have hit shelves here in town. I didn't realize there was that much demand for Colt to crank out 9mm's in that platform, especially with all the other higher capacity 9mm's on the market. To me, they seem more of a curiosity except for the cost of ammunition going down range with 9mm being cheaper. What are everyone's thoughts on these? Worthwhile purchase? Any guesses on their future value?

I think they're selling the coolness of the 1911. There are plenty of really excellent 9mm pistols out there for much less money if you want a gun for SD or HD, most holding more rounds if that's important to you. Devotees of the 1911 design no doubt go for these. I wouldn't. If I could afford to get a one of Mr. Browning's classics it would be in .45 ACP.

If I could afford one I would grab a full size. 9mm full size 1911`s are sweet shooters.

I love my 1911s, but they're all .45s. I doubt I'd buy a full size Government Model in 9mm. A Commander might be another story if...if...it was all steel. And blued.

But I'm still too partial to the .45, I think. Especially since you can pick up a 70 Series Combat Commander (all steel) from back in the seventies for less than $1000. I haven't done any searches for these new pistols, but imagine they won't come in at under $1000.

I wish Colt success, though, with this venture. They deserve a break.

Stainless National Match .45 was just over $1000

Also as an interesting note of how they were built, the Commander had the spur hammer normally found on full size guns and not the normal Commander round style hammer.

Most of my Colts are .45, and I love 'em.

...but

A full size Gov't in 9mm is pure fun. 9mm Commanders are very close. Why not have both?

My new plain-jane Colt Commander was a (I think) deal at $761 shipped. Discontinued XSE models, right around $1k as I post.

I've shot a full size 1911 in 9mm, it was a soft shooter. But with so many excellent 9's already out there...some even better than the full size 1911,...why bother? A 1911 is just supposed to be a .45. Anything else is just weird. My opinion only of course.

I might get an RIA 1911 Tactical or even a Taurus 1911 in 9mm, but I'm not shelling out extra cash just to get a pony logo.

Excellent understudy for .45 1911. I believe the 9mm 1911 is a worthwhile purchase for that purpose.

I really like and shoot the heck out of my RIA 9mm Tactical. Best $450 I ever spent.

Doesn't Springfield offer Colt-like 9mm's?

If I was getting one in .45, I'd probably get the Remington or Springfield.

I've had several .45 autos, all Colt, and a Colt Super .38 like Capt. Curl's, but the Super Match grade, with fixed sights.

I just bought a Springfield Range Officer 1911 in 9mm.
A real sweet shooter and factory ammo is almost half the price of .45.
I have a bunch of .45 1911's, but just had to try something different. Glad I did!

I stumbled on a NIB Star 1911 commercial in 9mm.

It was missing the safety spring and detent. The guys FIL lost it when he broke it down to clean it. Couldn't find Star parts. It sat for 35 40 years and he gave it to his son in law who wanted to sell it to buy a short Harris bipod. I had just found a NIB Harris at an estate sale for .75 cents. I traded it to the guy who left happy. I ordered a Colt spring with detent and had a nice shooter.

It made many auto travel trips with us. I feel it was slightly thinner than a 45. Fun to shoot. Found a Star collector, he did not have a commercial one in the box. Sold it and paid for 1/2 a S&W.

I have a 1966 Colt National Match that I really like along with a Kimber 1911 target/match they both would make it hard to want a 1911 in 9 unless it was a commander.

The OP remarked about current Colt offerings. Let me expand on that.

Colt currently is offering a run of what they are calling the Government Model Series 70 in .45ACP.

I remember when the original Series 70 came out, and its claim to fame was the collet barrel bushing. That bushing has been both praised and cursed over the years. Interesting thing, this new "Series 70" has no collet bushing. I have one, and it harkens back to the "pre-Series 70" guns. In fit and finish it rivals their Govt. Models from the 1950s and 1960s. In short, it is a wonderful new offering by Colt. If you can find one, buy it.

I haven't seen it offered in 9mm or .38 Super.
