"Winchester" stars Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester (Oliver Winchester's widow), and is about her legendary estate in San Jose, and her never-ending construction of her mansion, in the hope of keeping the ghosts of all those killed by Winchester rifles and ammunition at bay. I think most know that story.

According to the reviews today, it appears to be not so much an anti-gun film as it is anti-any manufacturer of weapons. It was not previewed to the film critics, and that's normally a good indication that it will be a resounding box office flop. If anyone sees it, let's hear your opinion.

She was a loon.

That's all there is too it. I find it incredibly hard to believe the plot/story would be any good, or compelling as an anti-weapons film.

Today a Chicago Tribune critic had an article on it. He said people next to him were falling asleep during the movie. Of course being with the Chicago Tribune means he is anti gun and it shows in his article.
I'll wait for more reviews.

The winchester mansion is quite the tour.....stairways that lead to nowhere. Took the tour many times as a kid. I can’t believe they made a movie of it.......

The Winchester House is pretty cool but they try to make it a lot more spooky than it really is, there are a lot of houses where stairways lead no where because they were planning for future expansion. They also tell you if you listen closely sometimes you can hear the ghosts moaning, but in any ancient, big, wood framed house there will be some noises and creaking. I'll definitely wait to hear several reviews before I spend money on the movie.

Skipping this piece of trash for sure. Saw the previews and yeah-I kinda know the story but has underlying anti gun meanings. Im skipping this hollywierdland trash.

The movie doesn't interest me much but the house is really worth checking out. I haven't been there in thirty years but they had a Winchester collection there then and a bunch of great gun books in the gift shop. That lady might have been weird but she invented some innovative water system in the house.

There is a very good reason for the strange architecture such as stairs that go nowhere. The house you see today is only part of the original house. The house had major damage from the 1906 earthquake. Instead of rebuilding the damaged parts of the house, they ripped away the damaged areas and closed off the open areas. A stairway that goes nowhere used to go somewhere. Most of the ghost stories about the house were fabricated by the owners back in the 1950s when they turned the house into a tourist attraction. Sarah Winchester was a nice lady who valued her privacy and who made steady work for men in a place where most work was seasonal. Hollywood entertainment is not history.

Most of the land surrounding the original house was sold in the 1960s. There used to be an apricot orchard across the road (Winchester Blvd). In the late 1950s, the owner was selling the orchard for $1000 an acre and was willing to subdivide. My mother wanted to buy a few acres. My father said the land would never be worth anything. My mother never let my father forget that.

Sarah Winchester believed that she was haunted by the ghosts of people killed with Winchester rifles. That is just historical fact and a key element in the story.
I've seen the trailers for this movie and its a ghost/horror story. Just like the many horror films that come out every year. I'm sure there will be some anti-gun sentiment to it as its part of the story, but I doubt its any kind of major anti rant.
Not my thing and I probably won't see it. But let's at least reserve judgement until we hear from someone who actually has seen it. ;)
