I recently joined this Forum after purchasing a S&W SD9VE. I have not taken it to the range as of yet but plan to on Sunday. I have picked up several hundred rounds of ammo. From Remington "Green box", Federal to Tul Ammo all in 115gr. FMJ Since the gun and springs aren't broken in yet.

My question is: Which would be best to run a couple hundred rounds thru for the first shoot? Or does it matter??

Howdy from the Upstate of South Carolina, and welcome to the forum.

Shoot them all, and note the characteristics of each. You may find some better than others. Might want to try some 124gr or 147gr as well. SGAmmo has been good for me doing mail order.

Not sure it really matters ricky. Although my 9VE doesn't seem to like the Perfecta. It will eat up Federal ammo though. My problem might have been the 20lb recoil spring with a stainless guide rod I put in it. 20lb springs might be too much for some ammo. I now have an 18lb spring in the pistol. Performance should improve.

I personally would use the remmington or the federal, but it may not matter. My SD9VE has never had any failures with any ammo after over 1200 rounds. (Have not used Tul Ammo though)(I'm now knocking on wood)

Thanks for the quick response & the Welcome. The reason I ask is I have read on this Forum some of the Sd40 guy's are having loading issues with there new guns. It may be a 40 issue because i've seen "no problems" with the 9's. Bigwheelzip I have wondered about the higher grain rounds. Is the recoil noticeable?

I will never buy Tulammo again!!! I put about 4 rounds of .40s&w through my brand new SD40VE and one about blew the gun up. Had to have the range attendant remove the spent shell with visegrips as it expanded and was stuck in the gun.

Examples of that exist from just about every manufacturer in just about every caliber

My Tula issues were around sizing. at least 5 per hundred from Walmart wont chamber in SD9VE

I have not noticed much difference between the different weights in any of my 9mm's. I switched to Federal 147gr HST on all my 9mm's for SD, after seeing the difference in expanded diameter over the smaller grain weights.
I shoot mostly indoors now, so I have switched to Speer Lawman for their Total Metal Jacket, TMJ, technology, hoping to limit breathing toxic gasses from shooting.

I'm one of those sd40ve owners, I can attest to the issues in the .40, mine was half clambering rounds, bulging every case, dropping the mag, ect, ran enough rounds to figure out it had nothing to do with shooter or ammo, hadthe gun less than a week, one trip to the range, and iit's currently in transit to s&w, the sd9ve seems to be the complete opposite, I've read many people would trust it with their lives, and seen zero complaints about anything mechanical, only things I've read about the 9mm negative is personal issues with two tone color, poly pistol, sights, ect but functionality of the 9mm sd seems to be on point. I would pick up a 9mm before I got another .40 in this line, but would still be cautious after my experiences with the big brother, here is to hoping s&w likes my buisiness.

I have the SD40VE and have put about 300 rounds through it including Winchester white box, Blazer Aluminum, Sollier & Bellot and Winchester PDX1. All 165g or 180g. No issues with any of the ammo.

I've shot tons of different ammo with my SD9VE and no problems. Just today I shot tulammo and the cheap Federal stuff, I think it's aluminum cased, from Walmart.

My only ammo complaint so far is that the extremely cheap Federal rounds literally fly right back in my face. I shot a box of 50 today and just about every casing ejected landed on my head, chest or pretty close.

Wow when I read this it dawned on me this very fact. I went to the range today to finally shoot the gun for the first time. (A health issue delayed my first shoot)
Anyway. I had the same thing happen with the Federal ammo but didn't catch it was the ammo brand until you just reminded me. The Winchester did not. Thanks we have found my preferred choice of ammo.

Fwiw, that round only did that with the SD9VE. For some reason it ejected fine with my Shield 9.

Not really fun to shoot when they are landing on top of your head, towards your face and bouncing off your chest. I'm surprised my shirt pocket didn't catch one.

Again, this is the only ammo thus far I've had that problem with and the regular Federal has always been fine, too.
