last january i picked up my first gun, a springfield xd9 subcompact in od green. it is my "car" gun and shortly before moving into a new house with my gf, i decided i needed a second "house" gun. keeping it simple, i picked up an xd9 4" service...in od green of course. threw on a streamlight tlr-4, hogue grip and got a viking fingerprint safe for the nightstand. i swung by academy sports one afternoon to check for 9mm and saw a green s&w 15-22. i had already been contemplating a .22 for a cheap plinker and knew that it was a sign. i put it on hold for the weekend and sold the purchase to my gf as my new toy since i am selling my sporty coupe to help our budget. the gun is basically my quick escape to go shoot a 100 rounds or so and relax.
i found the s&w 15-22 forums and lurked for a couple months doing research. after being heavily involved in the aftermarket car scene for the past several years, i was purchasing toys for my new gun in no time. i joined an indoor range 10 mins from me but it is only 15 yds so i switched from a scope to a red dot sight. ive put 500 rounds through it so far without any issues – 100 cci mini-mag, 200 federal bulk and 200 federal champion. i have a box of cci tactical for long range and i just ordered 2 more boxes of champion and a box of tactical with palmetto state armory's free shipping deal. shoot n c targets make things a whole lot easier as well. a boresnake and break free clp round out the cleaning regimen every couple hundred rounds.
current setup
utg 3.9" red/green dot – high mount
magpul miad grip – largest back strap
magpul pts ctr stock – just added 5 strips of electric tape on top of the buffer to remove any wiggle
magpul rvg
tacticool 1 3/8" barrel shroud – larger diameter seems to fit the overall gun better
black ladder rail covers
jp 3.5 lb yellow trigger springs – also polished fcg with felt wheel and flitz
extra mag – i actually like taking my time to reload at the range
utg tactical 34" bag - perfect for gun, targets, ammo, mags and a couple tools
100rd paintball pods – had a couple old ones lying around and found they're perfect for holding about 450rds of .22
long range
utg 3-9x32 cqb scope - switched out medium rings for high
utg sniper bipod - light and simple
tried out
utg 1" riser - had it on the scope but was too heavy and looked funny
hogue grip – finger cutouts made it too narrow
magpul moe grip – still too narrow
utg 4.2" red/green dot – preferred the slightly smaller 3.9"
magpul xtm covers – too stiff and colors didnt match
utg rubber covers – comfy but hid too much green
caldwell xla 13-23" bipod – helped with low table at indoor range but just too bulky
tacticool 1 1/4" shroud - just seemed too thin for the gun
bonus – around the same time i bought my two new guns, we picked up a colt python blue 6" for my gf's dad. he is ex-delta force and it was his favorite gun while he served. he eventually sold it a lot cheaper than what they go for now as his wife was not a big fan of guns. we thought it would be a nice gesture to replace it although we figured out afterwards that his was a 4" model. either way, he was beyond thrilled with it but we still haven't had time to go test it out. hopefully soon...
