I went down to my local shop today to start the paperwork on the newest addition to the collection. I'm really excited about this one. It's a Lew Horton 3" Model 624 in .44 Special. This is my first N frame and I was a bit worried about the size at first. My hands aren't real small but they're not large by any means. I've always thought N frames would not fit so never even gave them a thought. That was until I saw photos of 3" round butt N frames...wow! The gun fits me like a glove, I love it. I think the round butt and finger grooved grips go a long way in helping it fit me so nicely.

My local shop has a range on site and they let me take it for a spin after the paperwork was initiated. I brought two types of ammo to test; 180 grain Hornady XTP JHP and 200 grain Cor-Bon DPX HP. This is the very first time I've fired an N frame and the first time I've ever fired any .44 caliber. The experience was enlightening, awesome and knowing me...likely addicting. The double action trigger on this gun is second to none amongst the S&W's I've fired.

Here is the gun with the Hornady rounds. I shot 3 cyliners full (18 rounds) and while it's nothing to brag about I'm just happy they were all in the black. The recoil was not an issue at all. My Glock 36 in .45 has significantly more felt recoil than this load in the 624. This was with two hands, standing, 7 yards. Also, it was a mixture of both single and double action firing.

This is the gun with the Cor-Bon rounds. This ammo is annoyingly expensive and I needed to get back to work so I fired a whopping 6 rounds of it. The recoil was more than with the Hornady ammunition but still extremely controllable and caused me no issues what so ever. This was two hands, standing, 7 yards and only double action trigger pull.

That looks like one sweet handgun. I like the 44 special ballistics better than the 44 magnum for a pistol. Not surprised at the single action accuracy for a Lew Horton model but I am impressed with it's double action; well done!

AWESOME !!!

the more you shoot the more you will appreciate the N frame..

I have a 627 model of 1989 (.357) that shoots like its on rails, so to speak..

I also have a 625-5 .45Colt thats just awesome to shoot

and finaly the 629-4 .44mag Mountain Gun..

I had a 625 Mountain Gun (.45 Colt) but traded it for the 629..should have kept it..

anyways, I reload my own and have loads that are worked up to where these guns can and do shoot 1 hole strings of 5 @50'..

I dont know if you reload..after te initial cost of equipment, the reloads are cheap..so more shooting and more enjoyment..

enjoy the new gun and have fun...

Congratulations on a fine .44! I let one get away a few years ago and still regret it!

Nice post.

How long do you have to wait before they let you take it home seeing you live in Ca.?

Looking good. Nice find in ca, hope you did not pay too much. I know I have paid a premium for a few of mine here in ca but they are worth it. here is my 624. I don't shoot it much but I enjoy it non the less. Is that bullseye where the pictures were taken?

Nice gun, nice shooting. Welcome to world of N-frames. There's a lot of good fun to be had here -- and a lot of debt, too, as you found out with the cost of your ammunition.

I'm a big .44 Special fan. Not opposed to .44 Magnum, just don't feel the need for it in the kind of shooting I do at the distances where I can still see the target. There's a reason why the .44 Special was a stand-out target caliber from early in the last century, and your targets show that reason still holds force.

Congratulations!
