Up until recently I have not felt the need for a gun safe. I have wanted one for a long time but did not think it was worth the financial out lay for one. I live way out in the woods and only have a few neighbors. I have a a couple that are close and we watch out for each others places and we all shoot. With the escalation of gun and ammo prices lately, I have begun rethinking the necessity of the expense of a gun safe. A lot of people know we in the area shoot out here so it might be tempting enough for them to make a try for my guns. My closest neighbor has had a safe for a long time because he collects class 3 arms. I remember when I helped him put it in his house it almost wrecked both our backs and we had a chain fall (long story). I had to drive all the way up to Valdosta to get my Cannon Scout because the Academy Sports down here never seem to have one in stock.

A safe is a great investment, and not only for storing guns and ammo.
I keep my laptop, credit cards and important papers in mine. I'm planing on a second safe this year.

I too live out quite a ways in the boonies of upstate NY. For those reasons you try to be prepared. LEO response assuming you could even call could be easily 20 minutes. (This has been talked about in other threads.)

Re the Safe. As a person that has moved boilers, air handling unit's, large air compressors, autoclaves let me say moving a gun safe is not that hard if you know what you're doing and have a few simple tools. A piece of carpet a few pieces of 1'' to 2'' pipe and you can get a lot done.
FWIW I got my first gun safe around 1980!

For that reason bolt the safe down to both the floor and a wall as the easiest way to open a safe is dumping it on its back and using serious pry bars. Also if at all possible put it in as tight of an area as you can preferably with one side next to a wall. (Makes pry bars and jaw tools harder to work)

I have an alarm, but until a couple more years will not have cell service so I cannot back up my alarm with a cell dialer and have to rely on a LL call if the alarm takes off. To be frank out here with our phone company it might not work that well so even though I only have 2 neighbors within a noise hearing area I have a alarm system that will make some serious noise and hopefully scare away or be heard by a neighbor who will call it in (remember the LEO response time in my area is not good)

My one neighbor is also a serious gun person so we tend to watch out for each other, but if were both out at the same time anything is possible.

I have a safe, one of the larger ones. As others have said, I keep things in it that are not at all related to guns. I have an electric bar in it to keep it dry and I use a dehumidifier to keep the basement dry. Recently, I bought gun socks. As the safe gets more full, it becomes hard to take the guns in and out without a small bump. I bought gun socks for the handguns also.

By all means, bolt it down or bolt it to a wall (or both). It is helpful to have an electrical outlet near and an overhead light.

congrats on your new safe...it's the way to go for sure...i have a large one as well as an ADT alarm system...nothing is impossible but between the two will make a thiefs job a lot more dicey/difficult
