New guy needs some ammo help..

I'm getting my first handgun tomorrow at age 25. I've been around guns my whole life just have never owned a handgun. I purchased a m&p 45 compact and the place I'm buying it from is trying to sell me some blazer brass. I think 200 rounds for like 90 or 100 bucks. I've heard that they are pretty decent but tend to be a dirty round. Thinkin of just getting some winchester white box target rounds. 100 for 55 dollars I think. Any suggestions?

Try Wal-Mart, sometimes they have the Tulammo for under $20.00 per box of fifty.

Winchester is fine, so is blazer. And tula. A little dirty is not the same as dragged through Alabama mud during monsoon season

Today's scarcity and cost says to use what you can find. Soot, unburned powder all that stuff cleans up easily, especially in a non-magnum round. In a semi-auto pistol, is also depends on what works. I usually can find whitebox. I handload, and have had to learn and adapt a LOT over the last few years, often using 'dirty' components. No matter, it cleans up.

Buy the white box and save the brass. You can either take up reloading later or sell it to buy more ammo.

By the way, you gotta clean the pistol anyway. Dirty is relative.

I'm really considering reloading.. I've reloaded shotgun shells my whole life so I understand the value in it. The cost of ammo is so high I don't see how anyone can shoot and still be able to put food on the table.

I started reloading in 1972 with a Lee Loader to save money. Today, I have a 8x12 room dedicated to the hobby and currently load over 20 calibers plus 12 gauge shotshells. I currently purchase powder by the five or eight pound jug, primers by the case, and bullets by the thousand.

When I look back, I can't believe how much that first box of cartridges cost me.

Blazer Brass is decent, somewhat inexpensive stuff. Better quality than WWB, IMHO. Have no fear!

If you need a good Self Defense round for that, go with Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, Winchester Ranger-T, or Winchester PDX-1.

I would like to get a box of ranger t... I suppose you can't ever find it in stores tho. Did they change the look of ranger t box?? All I can find online is the black box.

My M&P40 ate everything I fed it. I suppose the .45 will be just as fine. I stay away from Korean- and Russian ammo, no matter if brass- or steel case. Prices are still ridiculous, but you still can find good deals.

The Ranger T bonded is the same ammo as the PDX-1 in the black box. They just market it in 20 round boxes, and charge more. Google "45 acp Ranger T ammo for sale" to locate a mail order joint that sells it in boxes of 50 for not much more than a 20 box of PDX-1

"reloading to save money" that's what I tell my wife!
She doesn't really believe that but she says reloading and shooting keeps me off the street and out of trouble so it's a good hobby.
We may not save a dime reloading but we do shoot a whole lot more with the money we have to spend on our hobby.

If you're somewhere where you can get ammo shipped, Gander Mountain has Blazer Brass at $84.99/200 right now. Free shipping since it's over $50. They ship pretty quick. You can probably do a little better on price elsewhere if you buy a little bigger quantity. Check gunbot. There's a lot out there now at $17.99-$18.99/50, but you have to consider shipping. I like Winchester white box, but I wouldn't cough up $55 for it. My local Fleet Farm usually has it for $39.99/100. Generally, any name brand brass cased FMJ should be good for practice. Just don't buy 1000 of one thing at a time til you find out how it works for you.
