Hello everyone. I have been lurking this forum for awhile and it led me to todays purchase of a spankin new 15-22! I live in CA and get it in 10 days. Found a good deal from Big-5. It was $399 lowered from $499 after a 20% off coupon. After tax and fees it came to $459 out the door. I'm so amped to be a part of the 15-22 community now.

I was hoping some of you could help me with a couple of questions. First, does anyone know how current my guns spec is as far as reliability epuipment (blue spring, updated ejector...) Serial is DTZ1***. If its not up to date would it be immoral to send the gun to S&W to get the current spec before shooting it? I'm not saying its going to jam, I just want to have the most reliable internals.

Second, do any of you know a good gunsmith or machine shop in So-Cal who could thread my barrel for a good price? I want to put a flash hider on it for looks. I'm diggin the DPMS SBR shroud one.

thanks guys!!

Welcome, sure you'll enjoy your new firearm. Mine is a DTU and haven't had any problems aside of mag snags so I couldn't tell you for sure via your s.n. I did however put a jp spring kit in (10.00) and took about 3lbs off.....highly recomend. I know belt fed offers the threading service for a reasonable fee, I'm sure he or some one will chime in. ENJOY!!!

a. Others may chime in on the entire s/n thing, since I do not know myself, I personally would say go grab some ammo and shoot it. There are many that are still using Gen1 models without issue and the paranoia that started mainly due to the issues with Remington ammo. Granted, they should have taken more care with testing the rifle with different brands of ammo but what's done is done.

Right now many are sending in their rifles in non-fired and, based upon those users conversations with S&W, they're getting a bit irritated by it causing them to be a bit more curt with people and no longer going the extra mile for many turning their rifles in this way. Sure, you could argue otherwise but the bottom line is that they're getting swamped with these and turn-around times are getting longer due to it and will continue to go up until all of the Gen1 rifles are flushed thru the system.

So you are well within your rights to send it off but if it were me I'd not do it until I knew I had a problem.

a. You will have to look around yourself since a lot of the folks I know that do provide the service hang out on a different forum. However, Belt-Fed is one of the members here and if you send him a PM he can get you setup within the same amount of time that you could have it done locally AND could even make a shroud for you if you like which many here are sporting as well as others here in the PRK.

Look at your magazine

Look at your magazine, if it says 25 round below the 22LR then it is the latest edition, OOPS! I guess you don't get those in CA. then look at the springs, if they are blue then they are up to date. But if you only have 10 round mags, you may not have any feeding problems. I hear they are more reliable.

Thanks for the quick replys you guys rock. Ladyfox, I hear what you are saying about sending it in. Its only fair to S&W that I actually show some faith and shoot the gun before letting other people's stories scare me into sending it in right away. If it does fail I know they'll back it and make it right and eveyone on the forum will gain cuz I can relay how the DTZ performed (for better or worse) out of the box.

RevolverKing, its coming with the short version of the 10rd mag which I believe is the newer type. I'd like to get my hands on a long 10rd'er though just cuz it looks cool + variety. In CA we have to do alotta dreamin :( 25's would be sweeet!

This may be a dumb question because some come threaded, but do you think having the barrel threaded by a smith will affect the warranty in any way?

as the owner of a first gen gun with over 18,000 rds threw it.. let me say that there is probably nothing wrong with your gun... id either bend the factory hammer spring to reduce its weight to avoid an OOB or just replace the springs with a j&p 3.5 kit for 10 bucks thats all s&w is going to do for the most part... enjoy your rifle and dont let other peoples problems bother you if you dont have the problems..if you do end up with a problem then we will go from there with it.. hope this helps and let us know if there is anything else we can do to help
