Yep, I'm new here. So new, I posted this in the reloading forum first, when it probably should have gone here.
I liked one of the recent posts "new here but long in the tooth". That describes me as well. Us newbies are encouraged to post a little about ourselves and get started, so here goes:
I've reloaded for rifles since I was in high school (with Herter's equipment back then!) I still do a lot of that. Five years ago my son was disabled in an accident, and is now paralyzed waist down. If anything, that increased his interest in hunting and shooting, and re-kindled mine as I worked at being his mentor and assistant. It's been good.
Just over a month ago, he bought himself a used 629-6, 4", a couple boxes of magtech 240's, and came to my place. We live 4 hours apart, he in Colorado, me in Wyoming. We shot up most of that ammo, adjusted sights, and both had a lot of fun with it. Accuracy is there, recoil not a problem. Then he wants to know if I'll help him reload for it since I'm the reloader guy. He went home and I got the Lee 4 die set, some WW primers, and cracked open a sealed 5 lb. container of the old 2400. Loaded 240 xtp's w/ 19.8 grs. and they shoot fine at about 1180 fps.
Now he wants to reload himself. Ordered a Lee classic turret and some of the extras and it's on it's way right now.
Questions:
We didn't get the 'Pro' autodisk (got the regular one) - should we have, or get the upgrade kit now? We got the riser, but not the swivel thing. Need that too? Got the safety prime.
Any hints on mounting to a board that can then be clamped to a table? He's got limited space. Need to set it up and put it away when he uses it.
I think we've read and looked at all the web info there is on this system, good stuff out there.
If we wanted to use cast 'boolits' what style and source should we look at? Not ready to cast our own. What cleaning and load advice goes with loading/shooting cast?
There appears to have been just the slightest touching of the cylinder to the frame at the bottom. Is this normal? I mean just the slightest and you have to look close.
He sits either in a blind or covered in ghillie camo while calling elk, deer hunting, etc. This is in bear and cat country, and he gets a little nervous when I or friends are out beating bushes and trying to dog something towards him. We're trying to figure out where to carry and how to carry the Smith when he's sitting there, binocs on his chest and a rifle or shotgun or bow in his hands or lap. Any suggestions?
There! If anyone wants to take any of this on, please do! I've read enough of this forum to know it's one of the best out here. The only other one I spend any time on is Nosler.
