I went to the Hattiesburg gun show today and spent two hours visiting and browsing, but I didn't see anything that really blew my skirt up.

Just as I was deciding to leave, I ran across something on a dealer's table that really got my attention. It was a new Model 40 in nickel. I had passed on one a couple of months ago with the case hardened frame, since I didn't like either the look or the price. The nickeled gun just sort $50 off the price, which was a good thing, so we cut a deal.

It's a gun of the miniature BBQ tool persuasion. There's no annoying lock, either, but oddly enough there is a vestige of what might have been: the curved arrow and the capital "L" for "Locked" are engraved on the frame, but I guess they forgot to drill the hole. :)

Because of the weather I was only able to put five rounds through it, but at five yards I kept all five in a 2 1/2" circle.

The trigger pull is AWFULLY stiff, and the small grip makes it hard for me to keep the grip safety engaged. I tried some pretty J frame grips on it, but they don't fit. I'm guessing there's some reason for this, but it's a problem. If I can't find a set of dedicated 40 grips, I'm going to go with a Tyler T. I'd love to find some real pimped grips, though.

All in all, though, a good day and a beautiful gun that I've been hoping to find for a couple of years.

I held a new nickel 40 this week and I struggled to acquire the sweet-spot grip in order to release the safety. I already knew that aftermarket grips were not readily available, so I passed. Frankly, I'd rather go for a Model-36 and bob the hammer spur.

LeLand, my only recommendation is that you try out the "lemon squeezer" safety and make sure you like it. There's nothing functionally wrong about it, but personally I dislike it.
