New M&P 10...Want to change Handguard

I have just got my new M&P 10. This is my first AR Vairient. I want to add a quad rail to this gun. Does the barrel nut on this have to be removed to change it out? I don't know which rail would be best...I know there are 2 different types, but I am not sure which one is better for me to get. Could anyone help me gather up all the tools that I need to tackle this?

I used the UTG quadrail mid length, and did not have to change the barrel nut.

Do you want a quad rail to get a free float handguard, or do you really need/want all that rail estate?

Whether or not you need to remove or even replace the barrel nut will depend on the design of the forearm you choose

I was planning on putting a foregrip/bipod on the bottom, and possibly my coyote light on the side. I have a rail mount for it, and I also have a scope mount. However, I want to keep the scope mount on my .243, as it is typically the gun that I take coyote hunting. Those are really the only things that I want to put on the gun.

I don't need anything except for the rail itself, correct? I do see that UTG isn't necessary a good quality product, but how do you like yours? I am just getting ideas right now. As of right now, I can't add a foregrip or bipod. Since my main use is going to be using this gun as a coyote gun, I would like to have a bi-pod and foregrip....Technically it doesn't have to be a quad rail as I will only be using the bottom rail, and possibly 1 side rail...I think a flashlight and laser would be kind of a waste as its not a "home defense" gun.

No real need to swap out the handguard(more loot for ammo ), just pick up whatever size rails you need and mount them to the stock forearm.

Short rail on top, longer on bottom, and a flashlight mount could most likely all be had for $30 or less form Amazon.

I like the look and feel of the Magpul mid length hand guard and have a 1.5" rail on the bottom for my bipod. You don't have to remove the barrel nut to install it, just push the delta ring way back. I took the heat shield off so it would fit better. I have the Ncstar offset flashlight mount and it works well on top of the gas block. I haven't been coyote hunting yet but am looking forward to it.

I have had my utg for 6 months, almost 500 rounds with it on....I like it. I dont mind the weight as I am 6'2" 250.

All the Chinese-made Leapers/UTG stuff I have ever tried is good and solid (but usually overbuilt/overweight). In sights and risers I generally consider this a good thing. They also have an all American-made "Pro" line that you might want to check out.

PS. I am using the Troy rail recommended in the S&W application manual when the M&P10 first came out. It is a bit thick and the accessory nuts don't leave much clearance as they sit above the inside slots rather than in them like the Sampson Evolution rail. I tried the Evolution first but it does not fit the S&W barrel nut tightly. I did not try swapping a DPMS barrel nut. The Sampson system (either from Sampson or the special Rainier Arms branded line) continue to be a favorite of mine for AR15 due to slimness, light weight, clearance, and the ceramic heat shield between the barrel nut and the rail.

Given the recent political concerns with Troy, I'd look elsewhere if I were to do it again. Possibly try a DPMS nut with the Evolution or go with something KeyMod.

My handguard pic

I went with the USA made UTG Pro mtu018. Picked it up at Optics Planet for 80$ Easy install , no gunsmithing , fits tight as a glove rock solid and it feels and looks good IMHO. I know its not a free float but my smithy shoots 1 moa from the bench. Can't ask more than that for a light and easy handling semi-auto deer rifle.

Let me know if this has good enough resoultion. This is the UTG pro mtu018. Snug fit up, easy to install. I had more problems getting the stock one off.
