Just picked up my new M&P 340 Scandium.

What a fantastic gun. I traded my steel 640 for this gun. Went from a 23 oz gun to a 12 oz gun. Perfect pocket carry.

Esp love the XS Sight System front sight.

I will get her to the range this weekend and will render range report and pics.

Unfortunately I am moving to Springfield, Illinois where I find that you cannot CCW.

I got the MP340 this past spring. It is simply the best at what it is designed for. Pocket with Uncle Mike's Sidekick it dissapears and light enough to forget its there. Wife shoots with light wadcutters...good enough for her defence and preference for light loads. Me, I carry and can handle Gold Dot 357 Mag. for short barrels. Not bad, when contrasted to my 329PD..which is also managable and the best for its intended purpose. The 340MP has just enough weight to not sting like the 340PD, but is still light enough to be great in te pocket. IMO, you made the right choice. Mine has the CT 405 laser grip which I think are a dream..at least for my hand, and slipping (nonstick) in and out of pocket....futher more they are so slim that it hides like a dream. The grips fill the hand with their length and a slight bulge in the middle sides. The rubber is ony on the front and back edge. Really dampens recoil, without snagging cloths. The black stainless cyledar is wonderful, cleans up with ease and looks much nicer, IMO, than the silver titanium.
I couldn't be happier. Great selection for you, I am sure.

Great revolver! I can even see that big ol dot without my glasses on. Best change I made to it - got the Crimson Trace 405s. It went from 10 rounds per session of +P to 150.

You might want to shoot it before you decide how fantastic it is.

They are light and the large night sight setup is nice, but they are pretty brutal to shoot with anything but mouse fart loads.

I think you're going to miss that 640 if you do any amount of shooting. My wife carries a 640 and shoots it with full-house .357 Mag and she's 5'2" and like 110lbs...it's got some pop, but it's not unreasonable. The 340 is a completely different animal. R,

I had an Airweight 642 that weighed in at 15 oz.

I used 400 ft lb loads in it with joy. Same load I will use with this.

Not much dif 12 vs 15 oz.

How in the world are you getting 400 ft lb out of a +P .38 Special?

Okay.

3oz is 20%. It's not a big deal when you're talking 37 or 40oz...something altogether different at the low end of the spectrum.

I'd also love to know how you're getting 400lb ft out of a .+P Special. None of the manufacturers I can think of even list one that gets up to 300lb ft and that's for a much longer barrel...no way out of that short tube on a 340. R,

So are we ever going to find out what that 400lb ft .38Spl +P load is? Seriously, I'd love to know what that is as I'll buy some tomorrow!

Here is the link to the ammo.

Also, Black Hills makes a 300 ft lb load

I also like the Golden Saber 357 mag which generates 410 ft lbs.

None of these are a problem to shoot.

I have used the Custom Cartridge ammo often with no issues.

I also have used the Speer Gold Dot Short bbl ammo in .38 Spl +P and 357 Mag and both work well and are well documented as to performance. The 38 spl short bbl shows 222 ft lbs and the 357 mag short bbl shows 298 ft lbs at the muzzle with a short bbl revolver. They are pretty snappy.

I am listing the mfg data. I never chrono'd any loads.

300lb ft is doable, but 400 I doubt is possible out of a 2" barrel in 38Spl +P.

I've e-mailed the Custom Cartridge folks to ask what barrel lenth they use to generate their data for those loads and ask what they'd predict out of a short tube. After they get back to me with an answer, I might order some and run them over the chronograph and let everyone know what the results are. I'm guessing the loads they list as being 1235fps might come in over a thousand, but even 1100 is unlikely.

To give a comparison, Cor-Bon's 10mm Hunter 180gr BCSP load is listed at 1,300fps out of a 4.6" barrel. Out of my 610 with a 3 7/8" barrel it averages exactly 1,200fps. Now, it's possible my gun has a slightly slow barrel, but 100fps dropoff for roughly 3/4" less barrel is pretty significant.

Got a reply back from the Custom Cartridge folks. They said their data was obtained using a 6" barrel. They predict a minimum loss of velocity of 50fps per inch and a max of 100fps per inch.

So, in a 340 might be down as low as 900fps.

I sitll might get some and chronograph it, but I doubt it's going to be any better than something like the Cor-Bon +P stuff or Speer 135gr Gold Dot meant for short barrels. R,

Well I just picked up a box of 50ea. Speer 38 Spl+P SB.

Here are latest pics of the 340.
