New M&P 9mm EZ & dry firing

New to the forum and a relatively new gun owner. With the cost of ammunition these days, I thought it would be a good idea to practice handling and aiming with a laser cartridge snap cap system. I just realized that I cannot pull the trigger without racking the slide each time. I have the laser cartridge in the chamber and I tried with and without an empty magazine. I can't find any information about whether or not the 9mm EZ even allows for trigger reset without a "real" cartridge in the chamber.



It is going to make it hard for me to test rapid fire on multiple targets if I have to rack each time.

I purchased the LaserHIT system if that makes any difference.



Any assistance is welcome.

First, let me admit I have not used the LaserHIT system, but have read their ads and looked at the video. As I understand it, the system is activated by a firing pin hitting an electronic cartridge, which sends out a laser beam. You can use your camera and computer to do the scoring.
For all such simple systems (for a couple of hundred bucks max), only a true double action pistol, which operates each time the trigger is pulled, will allow rapid dry fire. For all single actions and striker fired pistols, it is necessary to reset the action between shots. Notice they used a Beretta in their video.

I have used the elaborate military systems which operate the action and simulate recoil along with automatic scoring, but these are major $$$$.

So in reading the specs of the M&P 9mm EZ it says it is a DAO.. is this not a true double action?


We also have a model 59 which does fire every time we pull the trigger w/o having to rack it. I guess I could practice with it instead.



I paid $115 for the laserHIT... included the targets and wireless dongle for the TV. Just got it, haven't tried it yet.

Technically, but not really. The M&Ps are essentially single-actions, being striker-fired with the striker at something like 98-99% cocked. It's DAO in that pulling the trigger will bring the striker to 100% cocked (first action) and release it (second action).

There's no way of getting around it. You have to reset the action every time you want to pull the trigger, if you want the trigger's resistance. When I had a Glock 23 I often practiced with a dead trigger for dry fire self defense drills, and would reset the action if I was focusing on trigger control and sight alignment. It's one of the reasons I switched to hammer-fired DA guns. Dry fire practice is more efficient and I don't worry about programming myself to rack the slide every time I pull the trigger.

The good thing is that you only have to partially rack the slide to reset the trigger. Just pull the slide back part of the way until the trigger resets, if you haven't already figured that out.

Actually the M&P 9mm EZ is hammer fire, not striker.. but apparently that doesn't matter as it seems I do have to rack before pressing the trigger. Guess I'll just practice the aim and shoot with this pistol and use the 59 for rapid fire practice. I need to get the aim & shoot the target down first anyway!

The M&P 9 EZ has an internal hammer and is SAO. The slide has to be racked every time just like any other SAO pistol.

@Velle I'm just not finding anything anywhere about it being SAO. The only online info I've found is at handgunhero.com where it says it is DAO. Even S&W own site has it says Internal Hammered Fire, but not if it DA/SA or DAO/SAO.

My wife has one. It is not any kind of double action by any stretch of the imagination. It is single action only.

Yep, it's definitely not a double. That is OK for now. No speed practice on the LaserHIT but I need to practice accuracy anyway. I do enjoy shooting it.

Especially since Glock started the plastic pistol revolution there has been what I consider to be a lot of *******ization of action names. Heck Glock is a 'safe action'. What the heck is that? Some will call a Glock a double action since pulling the trigger does the last 5% of cocking the striker so it cocks(1) and releases(2) the striker. But an M&P striker fired gun is not DA since the striker is fully cocked by the slide movement and the trigger only releases it. As far as just shooting the two guns (vs analyzing how the action works internally) they are identical. So we have to be careful not to read too much into an acronym being attached to a specific pistol.

I have one of the laser cartridges and the phone app from G-Sight and use it for sight alignment and trigger pull practice with my 9EZ.
Yes the 9EZ is SAO and the slide must cycle to reset the hammer and trigger HOWEVER you don't have to pull the slide all the way back. All it takes to reset the hammer is to pull the slide back about 1 inch and release. Yea I know it still sucks you have to cycle the slide for every shot but that's what you have to deal with with the SAO internal hammer.
And, by the way, you can do it with or without an empty mag installed.
