Bought a new M&P 9 and after first 250 rounds today I've had 0 problems and love the pistol. I am curious that it seems to eject brass straight back towards the shooter and not to the right as I'd expect.

Is this something that should "break-in" or should I have concerns that I should bring up to my shop/range? Figure I'm not gonna worry much for 1k rounds anyway. Thanks for any info folks. Super happy to be a newbie around here.

I own an M&P9c, honestly not sure if there are any differences with the ejector, but mine ejects high right. Not back towards the shooter.

That said I am not saying anything is wrong, but glad you are looking into it. It does seem odd that the firearm would eject back towards you.

I have several S&W semi-autos and none eject as you describe.

So I am interested in hearing what you find out.

I would recommend call S&W, I have dealt with thier customer service and tech people and found them to be excellent.

Best of luck, please up date the thread with what you find out.

Are you holding the gun vertically with the magazine butt plate toward the ground directly below the gun, or are you holding it like they do 'in da hood' - kind of half sideways with your other hand tucked into your waistband saying 'c'mon mutha, you want sum a dis?' :D

Darn it Lost lake! You took my reply.:D

But seriously, DAU, I have a whole family of M&P's and they all eject high and to the right, and they have done so since the first round.

Dang reply robber!

My M&P9 Full size always ejects also high and to the right I have had a couple of instances where I got hit in the face lightly from bouncing off the wall in my range so yes you should at least give S&W a telephone call.

It should help clear things up and if you do not wear prescription glasses as I do then you do not have time in a stress situation to put on eye protection!

i have 9c and f/s i have encounter more almost straight back ejections when using S&B 9mm 115gr. ammo. Not every shot but enough to notice occasionally, and only w/ this ammo. i can run real junk (steel even) and almost pile it up to the right and rear if i dont move. So if you are using S&B i can see it happening maybe 20-30% of the time. FWIW

Can't say as I know how to shoot true "gansta style", and would think that would eject straight up, but since I'm a nube I wouldn't want to make any silly assumptions.

I was using standard 115 grain PMC range ammo. And both my wife and someone else at the range shot and had the same experience. Current theory (once again, as a nube forgive me here) is that there's a small metal nub on the top back of the slide that as it wears in should help correct the issue.

At the range wearing a cap and glasses I'm not worried and am happy to wait till it's really broken in to sweat it. Was just curious if this is something other folks have seen is all.

Nub???????????????????????? Ah, the rear sight doesn't have anything to do with ejection.

You might want to clean the extractor area very well, perhaps use a cleaning rod end to move the extractor in and out a bit, in case there's some debris affecting it's freedom of motion.

There can be several causes of this issue, your extractor needing a thorough cleaning being one. Ammunition can also affect the ejection pattern, as can how firmly you grip the weapon.

If the problem persists and happens with all types of ammo, call the S&W customer service folks. They'll take care of you.

i have shot 2 different m&p's and both ejected the casing back towards my head and not to the side. i too was wondering of this was just an s&w thing.

Watch my wife put 100 rds through my 4.25" M&P pro9 on Sunday. All the cases went high and about 4 o'clock with the WWB she was shooting.

I recall this problem being reported some months ago.

It was fixed by sending the gun back to S&W. If the problem persists, and is consistently repeatable, I'd do the same.

A gun that ejects back in your face is of little value as a self defense gun. You likely won't have eye protection, and maybe not even a ball cap, when protecting your life.

Well, about 3k rounds seems to have corrected the problem for the most part. I think my initial grip/stance may not have been strong forward enough, but it's not an issue anymore no matter who shoots the gun. Thanks to the folks with real suggestions, and a great big WHATEVER to the folks who thought I was shooting like a kid in a 80's gangster movie. Too much to learn to worry bout it.

I just got a brand new full size 9 and it threw every case back at myself and everyone else who took a try with it.

As another potential solution, my wife's 9c would do this too her sometimes, as would my full sized 9 when she shot it. It turned out that she was reacting to the recoil oddly. Rather than pure vertical muzzle lift, she was allowing the gun to capsize to port during recoil. Though it didn't seem like much visually, it was enough that the gun's "high right" became basically straight backwards. As soon as she trained that roll out, the ejection was consistently high right.

facial ejection

I'm having the same problem with my new M&P 9mm. I also am using 115 grain, maybe that's the issue? I don't think it's my grip or hold technique, but it could be.

I too was having that problem with my FS 9mm. I sent it back and they replaced the spring and ejector. Its better, but not throwing them like any of my other guns do. They also replaced the barrel and spring. Not sure why. Well the new barrel was off center, enough to see it wasnt right. Sent it back again. New barrel is much better. Not real sure whats up with all of that. Just kinda bummed that with about 200 round thru a new gun and been back there twice. As for others getting a "free mag" sent back to them, they were lucky. I love my shield, m&p.22 and the 9mm. Am looking at a .45acp now, but am not going to consider the M&P45. XDm is getting my $ next. Have their 9mm 5.25 comp and is that a nice piece. Am liking that new Ruger SR45 too. Thanks for letting me rant.:D

I too have sent my 9mm back. I'll post the results when I get it back. Hopefully this will solve my problem.

Took my G/F out shooting yesterday and she loved the M&P22 but when I switched her to the FS 9mm, she was getting them in the face, arm and down the shirt too. Im gonna have to possibly send it back again to have it "fixed". Was told by S&W that they replaced the spring and ejector. Anybody ever had to send a gun back multiple times for the same problem? After looking at my Shield 9mm and the FS 9mm, they look like the same piece, but the shield kicks them to the right and even bounces them off the wall at times.:mad:
