New M&P9L Core

Hey Guys/Gals! I recently picked up a M&P9L Core with the intention of turning it into an open gun for USPSA. I think I've narrowed down my reflex sight choice to a Leupold Delta Point and was wondering if I needed the model for all mounts or will the cross slot model (less expensive) work? Also, has anyone tried the Apex competition trigger kit? Good or bad?

Not sure about the red dot sights on a core but I've put competition triggers in my 40 FS and my Pro 9mm and I love them. Gritty feel is completely gone, breaks just under 3 lbs, and on the 40 I have the RAM...makes a nice audible click when it resets and on the pro you can feel it reset. I highly recommend Apex...good stuff.

I'm also looking into buying the Deltapoint and hopefully some will come along and let us know, I will call Leupold tomorrow and ask and will let you know.

I am loving my CORE 9. The long barrel makes it feel really good in my hand and the palm swell is the icing on the cake. I am just waiting for the Delta Point to come along at a good price or when I have all the money just bite the bullet. Enjoy.

If you're going open division, you realize the optic is just the first of about $1000 worth of add-ons you'll want to compete.

-Mag-Well
-Mag Extensions (one 170, and two 140s)
-Trigger Upgrades (Apex FSS)
-Threaded Barrel (Storm Lake)
-Comp (Carver)

Then you'll start reloading for 9 Major... since shooting Minor, in Open... is really tough.

I called Leupold about this issue. You only need the cross mount sight since the CORE comes with the mount for the Delta Point already. I looked at both the Delta Point and the JP and choose the JP. Why? I couldn't see spending $400 for a sight on a $600 gun. If it was an STI or something like that, then the more expensive sight seems appropriate IMHO. Opticsplanet has a 10% off sale with free shipping.

Yeah, I've got a Carver Custom G22 race gun. His stuff is awesome, but I'm done with .40 cal and Glock. I will be reloading 9 major. A Carver magwell and Taylor Freelance extension were ordered a few days ago. The rest of it will have to wait a little while. I may shoot Limited minor until I can get the barrel and comp.

I got the 4 MOA, but it hasn't shown up yet so I can't say much about it... yet. If I don't like it, it will be returned for the Deltapoint, but I hope that isn't the case.

The sight just showed up in the mail. It took about 3 minutes to mount, most of that was just figuring out which mount and screws to use. Hoping to get to the range today to test it out.

Had it out this afternoon. Started at 10 yards to get it on paper and then worked at placement. Used a bench rest to avoid my normal shaking hands. Got a nice group going and moved it out to 15 yards. The group grew slightly but still acceptable. When it came time for offhand shooting, the results were not what I had hoped for. While the group size grew (from the bench group) and the placement wasn't the same. Most of my shots were low. I think I am either flinching or pushing the gun down while pulling the trigger. So I am taking the blame for today's results.

That being said, the JP was simple to install (on a CORE), easy to adjust and stayed on tightly. But, at the indoor range I noticed that the dot itself was not a perfectly round clearly defined dot. I could see dots within the dot and some blurring at the edges. Not sure if it was the lighting or not. When I was playing with the sight at home in brighter light I didn't notice any blur. I will be going to the outdoor range this weekend and will see if there is a difference. If not, I just might return it for the Deltapoint. But that too would be a purchase made sight unseen.

I think the blurring efect may be due to the Jpoint been plastic lens, the Deltapoint owners also report some blurring and also think this is usual effect on red dots that have the self adjustable feature.

Something to consider regarding the deltapoint:

To adjust the windage and elevation, you need to loosen the screws on the rear of the sight (ie loosen screws, adjust sight, tighten screws, fire weapon to locate where it is sighted, repeat as necessary). The problem is the rear iron sight makes this extremely difficult. Not enough room between the iron sight and reflex sight to access the rear screws. There are ways around said problem (as discussed in other threads) but it is something to think about. RMR is the shizzle, IMHO

I have the JPoint, and noticed slight blurring with cheap safety glasses on indoors. If I put on my presc. glasses, the whole dot looks like a fuzzy smear.

With my Tifosi's, it stays pretty clean.

The brighter the ambient light (outside), the better in all cases.

I was wearing my cheapo glasses, so I will check out the better ones next time out. One of the main reasons I went with the JP was the adjustment issues. That being said, once done, they likely don't need to be touched again.

The RMR costs almost as much as the gun.....nice but too rich for my money.

I'm still struggling with what is my best option for my CORE.

1. Trijicon HD sights
2. Deltapoint $400.00 (ok track record but not as durable)
3. RMR $589.00 best quality and durability but more $ than the actual weapon.

Keep in mind a fuzzy or blurry dot might actually be astigmatism with your eyes.

As far as sights go... I am not a huge fan of Jpoints with their plastic lenses. Of the ones I have seen they will scratch over time.

I ended up using a Burris Fastfire 3 on mine despite not being officially supported, the #5 mount works great and while it sits high you can still see the tops of the sights to co witness if needed.

I got the JPoint 8moa for my CORE 9 and couldn't be happier. It was the least expensive way to go with the coupon, $240. I shoot at 25 yds or less. Once sighted in, which was a little laborious, the gun is as accurate as I am steady.

I have a Burris on a 686 that I shoot and although accurate I find sight aquisition to be quite a bit harder than the JPoint.
