New M19. Unusual bluing loss

Hi guys,

I recently picked up a clean model 19-2 and shot it over the weekend. However, upon cleaning after the range session (which shot great btw!), I noticed some odd blue loss on the front of the cylinder. It's on the side, not on the cylinder face, but there are two "dots" of bluing loss for each hole in the cylinder.

I'm wonder what could have caused it, there's 6 pairs of dots that wasn't there when I picked it up. I ran about 60 rds of 125 gr. .38 spl through it.

Is this an unusual case? I'll try to get pictures of it later today.

You might want to take a closer look at those spots..if they are shiny then they are lead from shaving the bullet as it enters the forcing cone..since it is on all charge holes that is what makes me think it is lead and not a loss of blueing..carefully take a single edge razor and see if you can "scrape up" the spots..all5x

Thanks for your help. It was dark when I cleaned it last night so I didn't get a good look. However I tried to scrape it off with my nail, none of it came off so I assumed it looked like bluing loss. It is shiny like bare metal, but since you mentioned it may be lead I'll try to take a closer look at it today.

BTW, what's the proper terminology for the holes in the cylinder?

chambers are where the cartridges go in, chamber throats where the bullet come out of cylinder

Screw hole in top-strap causing fouling to be deposited on the outside of each chamber on the cylinder surface. My 29-5 does that. It will clean off.

I think it's from the lead that is turned to lead vapor and is left on the gun where ever there is a bit of gas blown out.
The hole on the 29-5 is the front most scope mount hole which on the 29-6 is filled with the larger screw used to hold the sight blade on versus the small one used on yor 29-5. I had heard the story that the spots on the cylinder were one of the reasons for the change to the
large screw.
Pics of the spots on the 19 would be helpful.

I thought they were "chambers" for fixed ammunition and "charge holes" for non-fixed (powder and ball) ammunition.

thats just lead, it will come off, if it were me I'd shoot the crap out of it....................... and then clean it

If it's lead it will come off. Don't use anything that will damage the blueing or the metal.
