I just inherited my fathers gun collection. There is a 38 S&W Special CTG, with D194983 on the butt. Can anyone tell me about the gun, and what it would currently be worth???
I have attached a photo. Thanks!!

It appears to be a Model 10 heavy barrel .38 Spl but it would be difficult to put a value on it w/o knowing its age - others will have to weigh in on that.

These are great guns that were used by police for decades.

Condolences on the loss of your dad.

Model 10s are nice shooting guns!:) They produced millions of them, your gun is probably worth $250-300. Looks in nice condition.
Shoot it and enjoy, nothing like shooting a 38 Special! (CTG=cartridge)

Great gun. Will last forever with a little bit of care. Made in 1969 / 70.

First off, since nobody has said it, welcome to the forum.

That should be a Model 10-6 (look inside the frame recess exposed when you open the cylinder, it should be so marked there) that dates to about 1969.

These are excellent shooters, but as far as S&W's go, pretty common and pedestrian as opposed to rare and collectible. In used condition sans box, a few hundred dollars retail is about right. The value takes a bit of a hit if the stocks (grips) aren't numbered to the gun (stamped inside right panel).

Thank you everyone for your help and replies. Yes, I did find the 10-6 model marked. My oldest son has decided to take the class for carry/conceal and has asked for this. So I guess the true value is priceless.... Thanks again!

This is one of the best pistols ever made. But they made literally millions of them so not rare or hard to find. Monetary value is not tremendous- maybe $300 or so. Emotional value is as you say- priceless.

Welcome Islandchic your 10-6 is a very good revolver. I have a 10-8 that I carried on duty as an armed security officer at a federal courthouse for 2 years. The model 10 in its many configuartions has protected and defended many law enforcement officers over the years. Your son will be well protected with it.
