I'm a new member here. I hope I can get some opinions on a problem I had with a new 5" 629 Classic this week. I sent the following e-mail to the S&W Service Center. I copied that e-mail to expedite this post.

---------------------------

Gentlemen;

I recently purchased a new S&W 629 Classic.

I took the pistol to the range for the second time several days ago and it functioned perfectly. I fired about 50 magnum lead rounds through it.

When I got home I took the pistol apart to clean it thoroughly (all but removing the side plate). When I attempted to reassemble the pistol I found I couldn't close the cylinder. There was about a 1/16" gap where the cylinder meets the crain and no matter how many times I attempted to close it I wasn't successful. I inspected inside the channel for some kind of obstruction and found none. When I placed the screw that holds the crane in it's proper place and tightened it, it seemed to not go in as easily as it should. The cylinder was still open and remained very difficult to turn because of the mis-alignment when the screw was tightened.

I carefully attempted several times to close the cylinder without success -- with the screw and without the screw installed. The crane appeared to be hitting something very solid when attempting to close it (perhaps on the area of the frame just under the forcing cone)

No luck -- until the cylinder suddenly turned easily and it closed normally and smoothly.??? I opened and closed the cylinder several times and it closed and functioned smoothly and perfectly as if nothing was wrong.. No indication there had been any problem!!

I've dry fired the pistol and put it through it's normal open and close function for several days now without a problem. However, I haven't taken the pistol apart again as though I were to clean it.

I'm contacting you to determine if there is something additional I should do or be aware of.... I have no idea what went wrong and what occurred to correct it to it's apparent normal function again. Hope you can help..

Thanks!!

---------------------

I received a reply from the Service Center suggesting the problem may have been a loose ejector rod. I have since checked it for tightness and found it very tight....

Any ideas?? I own many S&W revolvers in all frame sizes and have never had a problem like this with any of them. The timing seems to be OK but I'm a little "punchy" about shooting it again.

It has had just 50 rounds of 44 Specials and 50 rounds of 44 Mags fired through it (19 gr. 2400, CCI 300, 245gr.KT lead, RP cases for the mag loads). There wasn't the slightest sign of excessive pressures and the pistol disassembled easily and normally.

Thanks for any suggestions!!

Maybe a piece of bullet material was in the hole (cylinder / yoke or frame hole) jamming it from going home.
One trick that I use, if I remove the yoke from the gun, it will stay inside the cylinder as I brush out the bores, AT ALL TIMES! If not, crud could fall inside the cylinder causing you reassembly problems. Been there and done that.....

Thanks for the reply, 500 Magnum Nut,

You got my curiosity up so I disassembled the pistol again. The only area unchecked earlier was that inside the cylinder at the base of the extractor rod, and sure enough, out dropped two pinhead sized pieces of lead.... I've never had that happen before!! They obviously got in there during the process of cleaning it.. I owe ya one.

Thanks again....
