First and foremost, hello! I'm a new member and this is my first post here. Some of you may recognize my username from other forums. :)

I've only lurked and come here to do some learning every now and then, but today, I had a reason to join and become a member. I finally had some time to pull out some of the guns I inherited from my wife's late grandpa when he passed away last year. He gifted me a couple of them when he was alive, so admittedly, those mean more to me and I can't see myself selling them. However, some of them were given to me as a thank you from the executor of his will for the help I provided after his death. This S&W M625 "Model of 1989" was one of them.

I'm trying to decide if I should keep it or not, but if I do, I'd like to bring the gun back as close to 100% factory spec as possible, including gathering up any accessories that might be missing from the original package. This is where I need some help from the S&W experts!

So can anyone tell me from looking at the pics below what might be missing from the original package?

Here are a few things I already know are not original to the gun:

- The gun lock. I grabbed this red lock from another older cardboard box-era S&W revolver box that was going to be thrown in the trash. It was with 2 small keys that I believe were for a revolver that had a "Hillary hole." Did S&W ship the M625 with this red lock or was it a different style lock? Where might I be able to find the correct style lock for this gun?

- The front sight. Grandpa seems to have taken the gun to his local 'smith to have a dimple drilled and then filled with the fluorescent orange paint. The orange dot bothers me because it doesn't fit in the rear notch and gets "cut off" in the sight picture. I also happen to like my revolvers with plain black sights, so I went ahead and sourced what I believe is the proper all-black patridge sight with a height of .278".

Aside from those 2 items, what else might be missing or incorrect with this kit? How about the owner's manual? I took a picture of the revision # on the back for reference. I'd like to find a manual in better condition that doesn't have any annotations with an ink pen like this one does. However, I have no clue if this is even the correct manual for this late 2001 production M625.

Moon clips? My understanding is that these came with moon clips, but how many? Are there different styles of moon clips that S&W offered over the years? If someone can point me in the right direction to help me find some original moon clips in the original packaging from this era, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Anything else I might be missing? NRA pamphlets or brochures, etc.?

The S&W logo Hogue grips have some cracking/splitting going on towards the top of one side. I bought what I thought were exact replacements on Amazon, but turns out they were newer production grips with the Hogue logo instead of the S&W logo. How difficult is it going to be to find actual S&W branded replacement grips for this gun?

I know that is a lot of questions, so thank you in advance for any info or tips you can give me! Also, before anyone questions my sanity or why I'm going through the trouble to make the package as original as possible, it's because I already have plenty of guns for shooting and not enough time as it is! I have no use for "Bubba'ed" guns that are going to sit around collecting dust and taking up space in my safe. If I can't make it a complete "collector's package" worthy of passing on to my kids or grandkids one day, I'd rather just sell it to someone who will shoot it and enjoy it. ;)

Thanks again for your time, and I'm looking forward to learning more on these forums. Cheers!

I would urge you to keep it and any others that came from Grandpa. Sounds like Grandpa was a very good man.
All guns I am given I keep to be given to my sons or grandson. Just my thoughts on the matter. And welcome to the forum!

I bought a new 625-3 1989 3" model in about 1991. It came with rubber stocks that I immediately replaced with wood stocks. I don't remember the brand of the rubber stocks, but I still have them, stored in the box.

Same for a 625-6 5" that I bought new around 2000 or so. It came with rubber stocks that I replaced with wood. Apparently, the factory installed rubber stocks on 625s for a good while.

I use mine in combat competitions so I was forced to add a hi viz front sight years ago as I was having trouble seeing the black on black sights at speed. My 625 1989 or 1988 is very accurate. I used it at an Appleseed Pistol Clinic this year. Did fine except on the speed stages that required a reload. The instructor said it was the first revolver he had seen. Most Appleseed shooters used .22 semis. The 625s are fine revolvers. Most of the extra stuff that comes with a firearm gets misplaced over time. I wouldn’t be too concerned about the extra stuff. Enjoy your Smith.

My condolences.

I think you should pass it on to someone who will enjoy it. You never know what your children or grandchildren will do with firearms.

They were Pachmayrs
I have 5 and 3 inch 525-3s.

I'm kind of 50/50 on whether I should keep it or sell it. Between the guns Grandpa personally gave me and all the guns I bought myself over the years, my kids are set either way. I will encourage them to keep everything I leave them and pass them down to their own kids one day, but ultimately, what they decide to do after I'm dead and gone is up to them.

I have a pretty big stockpile of .45acp for my semi-autos, which is part of the reason I chose this gun of the several I was offered by the executor of his will. Figured I could add a nice gun to my collection without having to get into a new caliber. I do like it and should probably shoot it before I make a final decision. Either way, I can't stand the front sight, so I'll have to fire up the drill press one of these days and get the black patridge sight installed.

Does anyone with a M625 like mine have mint condition S&W logo Hogue grips they'd like to sell me? Sounds like it was pretty common for people to swap them out for aftermarket grips, so I'm hoping someone has a minty set of the rubber grips hidden away in their spare parts bin! As mentioned, mine have some cracking going on, so if I'm going to keep the gun and shoot it, I'd like to pick up a spare set of grips in mint condition and keep using these or maybe some aftermarket wood grips so I can keep an original rubber set tucked away "just in case." :)

Thanks again!

Nice 625! I have a newer one, 625JM. If you wish, RIMZ poly moon clips are easy to load and unload. Enjoy your gun! Have added a Hi Viz fiber optic front sight to mine. Bob

I have a Model 625 1989 5” purchased new in 2000. I’ve put a link in for a photo of the box and contents. I have a red lock still in the original wrap which looks like the one you have. Enjoy the 625 - great revolver.

Many thanks, Dave B! Makes me wonder why Erich says they didn't come with a lock...

Did yours come with moon clips or no?

Looks like the manual is different too. I can't help but wonder now if S&W changed what the gun shipped with between 2000 and late 2001, which is when mine was manufactured. Hmmm

Love the 625 or 1989 and wish I would have kept it. Mine came with the lock as well. I shot competitions with it and no gun is faster to reload then the 625 with moon clips.
