As the title says I'm new here, and I'd like to find the ship date for the Model 10-10 I was given by a friend. Serial is BJH7144. He bought "some" recently and believes they're turn-ins from the Michigan Dept of Corrections. This is one he's had Dura-Coated. I've read that "later" Model 10s are safe for +P+, if safe I'd like to use +P in this as it'll be my in-house gun. More handy than the AR, which will continue to be my outdoors/coyote gun. Thanks for the help!

Welcome! This one likely shipped in late 1992 or early 1993. It is safe for all the +P .38 Special you can afford and find. Enjoy!

Welcome to the Forum. Always great to have new members.

Congrats on your 10. Most of us here agree it's a "gotta have." It's the gun you should never sell. Good shooting.

Once again, Welcome to the Forum! That Model 10 will probably get you in trouble! Once starting with a Smith, they tend to make you want for more! (I did not say it was a bad thing) Bob

Wait! If you join the forum you get a free gun? No one told me.
Daddy, I want a golden goose!

Seriously, welcome to the most informative gun group I know.
That's a beautiful pistol; show it some love.

No Rusty, you don't want a golden goose. You'll only end up worrying every day about the value of the gold. Better off with the free gun. Now you started something: my J-hound members have only expected a membership card. Now they're gonna look for a free J-frame!

Welcome from Louisville, you lucky dog! :D

Very nice M10. My 10-5, 4" standard barrel of 1967 vintage, was Dura-Coated by a former owner. I've thought of having it refinished in blue since I can no longer walk the woods and get rained on. That's why I bought it; but for a house gun, I kind of like the look.

Yours looks even better, and will handle lots of +P.

For the record, S&W officially warns against using +P+ in any of their guns, but I have a 640 no-dash that is factory etched "Tested For +P+".

I just see no reason to shoot anything that hot for which there's no SAAMI standard.

After seeing yours, I may get Ugly Betty (my 10-6 with finish issues) DuraCoated.
I got mine cheap because it wasn't pretty.
Had been a police evidence locker gun that was bought by the LGS.

More than one old cop has told me (based the location of rust) that it may have been used by someone to commit suicide.
I didn't know how to feel about that.
Almost traded it off.
Then, I took it to the range and shot it.
Ugly Betty ain't pretty, but she's got it where it counts.
Yeah, I'm keeping her.

Are there any books or manuals that are recommended for owners of these revolvers? I'm not sure I'd need the Standard Catalog, I'm looking more for maintenance manuals.
