Hello to all. I hope the prelude to the holidays is treating everyone well.

I'm new here and I'm going to buy an M&P40c right after chistmas. I was looking at the M&P40c with the x-grip option. The theory sounds great to be able to have a full-size pistol and just by changing to the 10 +1 clip i can go concealed carry.... but is it a good idea? What are the pros and cons of this? can any S&W M&P40/40c clip work or are clips exclusive to this model? Thank you for your help, in advance!

It's a magazine, not a clip......

I have both a 40c and and 40 fullsize. I use the full size magazines in the 40c with an X-Grip adapter and find it just as comfortable as the full-size - just a slightly shorter barrel and corresponding shorter sight radius.

The other advantage of a 40c (or a 40 fullsize) is that you can easily convert them to 9mm with a barrel swap and 9mm magazines (again either compact or full size).

Welcome to the forum from Texas.

I have the M&P 40c but only the mags that came with it. I don't want the extended mag capability. That is just my thoughts though.

Thats great to hear! I was worried there would be a draw bac to this model. Ive read articles on the shorter barrel length and the guy writing the articles said that he hhas a full-size M&P 40 and when he picks up his 40c there isnt much difference in the way it shoots compared to the full size barrel.

Welcome to the forum....and you have just awoken the magazine vs clips members.

I have three general configurations for my 40C:
1. In 9mm to go to the range with both the standard mags and full size mags with X-Grip.
2. In rare instances I'll carry it stock with the standard flush based .40 mags. I don't really ever carry it though because I have other better (smaller) options for EDC.
3. For nightstand duty in .40 with the full size mags with the X-Grip extensions.

I put Tru-Glo TFO night sights on my 40C because it is my nightstand gun. With 15+1 in .40, or 17+1 in 9mm it is a perfect fit for nightstand duty and that is where I believe it really shines.

To keep up my proficiency with the .40 S&W caliber I'll shoot a couple strings of fire at the range in .40, but 9mm wins the fun factor. My primary .40 S&W range shooter is a 4013TSW, so for those that are familiar with the 4013TSW it should explain why I shoot the 40C in more 9mm than the .40 S&W.

I agree with Shoot2er. I also have a 40c and it's main purpose is a nightstand gun. I have it set up with the full size .40S&W magazine w/S&W M&P magazine grip extension, Viridian C5 light, and Crimson Trace Laser grips. For me the CT laser grips and the C5 light make the 40c the ideal home defense handgun where it could be used in low light conditions. You have just about any conceivable home invasion scenario covered and with the full size magazines, you would have more than enough firepower for just about anything. Configured this way it is every bit as comfortable as a full size, yet with a simple swap to the normal 10 shot magazine it could be used in CC, although in my opinion for CC the Shield is probably a better choice.
But for an all around handgun, the 40c is hard to beat. Mine has been very accurate and 100% trouble free. It's really the best of both worlds, an (almost) full size handgun when you need it, and yet is compact enough for CC (with standard magazine). I think you'll be happy with it.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your future M&P. The X-Grips are great! Just make sure you practice w/ the shorter mags if that's the way you'll be carring.

if ya dont have the money right now to get two guns then yea it works i have held them but don't own it personally. i use my m&p 45 FS for nightstand gun and i daily carry my shield 9mm

I cc the 40c with the 10 round magazine and for HD I have something else I use that is a bit bigger with a full sized grip and already has night sights installed.

If I needed to use the 40c as an HD piece, then I would get a couple 15 round magazines for that purpose. The x-grips are not really required to make use of the full sized magazines in the 40c, but they do fill the gap between the grip and the bottom of the magazine if you want/need it to do that.

To me it's always good to have some options.

I have the Shield .40 for carry ( purchased 2 months ago). After 2 months of carry and 400 + rounds fired, I don't think I could get a better Pistol for carry. Due to my complete satisfaction with Shield, I bought a M & P .40 fs yesterday for my new home defense handgun. This is agreat forum that will you great advise.

Thank you al for all the valuable information and even better hospitality. Due to all the advice, I will be purchasing the M&P40C w/ xgrip option the day after Christmas..stay tuned for after I shoot my new S&W..Thanks again all and have a Merry Christmas!

I did carry a S&W M&P 40, than I switched to the S&W M&P 40c...

I liked it, with my bad back it was to heavy for me though...

I carried it with the flush Magazine in it and two extra FS Magazines with the grip extension on my other side...

Not sure where you are from, if it is Mass plan on buying a APEX kit also...

We have the horrible 10 to 15 Lb triggers here and you need to "fix" the gun before using it...

Good Luck and Enjoy...

I cc my 40c with 10rd magazine and finger extension as it is easier to conceal than when full-size magazine and x-grip extension are on-board. So, the full-size mag/x-grip extension is what I pocket-carry for a reload. Thus both concerns I have about printing and max capacity have been resolved. Another unanticipated benefit of the x-grip and full-size magazine comes from my wife. The longer grip area makes shooting the 40c more comfortable and controllable for her. More like a FS M&P would be.

I shoot the 40c and 9c with both compact and full size magazines.

As others have said the flush flat floorplate mag conceals best. Unlike others I am not a fan of the x grip. Having a full size mag without the sleeve is not a problem for me, I don't mind wrapping my small finger around the bare magazine one bit.

I've gotten my hand pinched by the sleeve against the bottom of the magwell and don't particularly like that. I also think it's simpler to do away with any problem a sleeve, which can move, might cause in reloading.

So, I've removed the sleeves on all my extended magazines for the Shield, XDs, and M&P compact.
