Just got a Model 686-5, 357 Magnum with a 5" barrel with a full lug. It is stainless steel and has adjustable rear sights (v notch type) and a HiViz front sight. Serial number CEP4XXX. It came with a rubber grip. I'm having a real challenge finding references to this particular configuration. I also have a Model 617-6 in 22 LR with a 6" barrel and full lug and except for the different barrel lengths....they look the same. Information on the 686-5 would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! You've come to the right place!

Question: Have you looked at the S&W website? Is this it? http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/...57769_757767_757751_ProductDisplayErrorView_Y

Go to Revolvers>Med K/L frame. Check that out then see if you have any questions not answered there.

I don't see the hi-viz sight listed there. But the front sight is pinned, so it may have been replaced if you didn't buy it new.

Also, post a pic or two of it if you can using the "go advanced' button.

Again, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your nifty new 686 - you are going to love it!

686-5 with a 5 inch full lug barrel question

Can't find it on the S&W website. Found a 686-5 Plus that doesn't have a full lug on the barrel. Also failed to mention that this is a 7 round fluted cylinder. Thanks for the quick reply.

The -5 was made 1997 to 2001. Your CEP s/n would likely be December 2000 to January 2001. You won't find much on Smith's web site on a gun this old.

Did you get the box? On it would be the product code. This number can be of great value in researching obscure S&W's.

I think you might have a 104098. Try searching that product code and see what you find. My notes say 1,010 were made.

686-5 with 5" Full Lugged Barrel

That's the gun! The Product Code 104098 picture and specs are exactly the same as the gun I have.

Thanks for your generous help.
