Greetings from Central PA.
I sent an email to S&W last night about this and I'm waiting to here back from them.

I just received the M&P 22 on Monday 4/1/2013 and have not fired it yet. Last night I was trying to do the initial cleaning before taking it to the range to fire.

The takedown lever rotated down 90 degrees just fine, but I couldn’t pull it out. I finally slipped a narrow strong strip of cloth under the takedown lever and was able to pull on the cloth and get the lever to pull out; it took a lot of force to get the lever out the ½ inch from the frame.

Questions:

1) Is this normal?
2) Am I doing something wrong?
3) Does the unit need repaired?

Thanks for any advice, Joe

Thanks, I'll try that tonight - but it was really, really tight!

Got a stock answer from S&W
Dear Customer,

The lever is supposed to be rotated down and pulled out no more than 1/2 inch. This can be hard at first because the gun is new. When lubrication get in the gun that will loosen up.

If further assistance is required please reply accordingly.

Sincerely,

Mine was super tight until I cleaned up the excess plastic in the hole with a round file... Pops in and out nicely now... Since people have broken takedown levers in the past, I would say it is yet another QC/design issue... Par for the course...

Mine was exactly the same way. VERY difficult. I have taken mine to range many times since and it does become easier to pull out. Using the actual "tab" to pull it out isn't the easiest. I use it to get it out enough that I can grab it right at the slide and "wiggle" it out. So yes, it is VERY difficult when it's new, but it does get easier with use. Like someone else said, be careful not to pull it all the way out. I have not done this personally, nor did I feel like I was pulling hard enough to pull it all the way out, but I'm sure it can be done as the manual says it is so. Good luck and just know you aren't doing anything wrong.

It will loosen up by time. Mine was very hard to take out for the first couple takedowns. I cleaned the excess factory grease out and frog lubed the gun. Takedown is a breeze now.

Greetings from Central PA.
Congratulations on your new pistol, and welcome to the forum from another Pennsylvanian. I got mine back in February, and it was pretty much caked in oil and grease. I cleaned it all out and lightly lubricated it before I went to the range for the first time. Be sure to clean out under the barrel where the guide rod attaches. I've put over 800 rounds through it since, and the takedown lever does free up over time. Avoid pulling on the lever itself. Use your fingernails and grab the sides flush with the slide. Too much pressure on the end of the lever has been known to cause it to break off.

I like to never got mine out when new. About 1000 rounds through it now. After cleaning and lubing the first time I just sat in front of the tv and worked the lever in and out a couple dozen times and its pretty easy now. These are sweet little pistols! Hope you enjoy. I put Dawson Precision F/O sights on mine. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1365110801.722055.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1365110830.224424.jpg

Mine was very tight at first but its loosened up and is easy to work now.
I think you 'll like you pistol.

Same boat here. I've got 1 range trip and 120 rounds through the gun with no issues (CCI "Troy Landry" MiniMags). It'll get better once the grease is flushed out and then over time better yet as it is used. Don't forget to tear your magazines down and clean them as well. Talk about grease... I had a couple where the follower was totally covered in a layer of grease.

As others have said, tight at first, then it loosens up. Great gun isn't it?

Continued Ballistol use will help as well. Makes cleaning and field stripping a breeze after a few uses.
