Hi, all, new member here, (well, a re-member, couldn't re-member my user name or the email I used before)

My wife has a 1917 which has some condition issues that prevent her from shooting it much, so I thought a Model 10 would be a great gun for us to share. The Model 10s I handled really didn't call out to me, then one day the local gun shop had a post-war Military and Police in 38 spl with a 5 inch barrel. It didn't take me long to realize this gun was what I was looking for.

The s/n is C 103xxx, with matching #s on the bottom of the barrel, the rear of the cylinder and the underside of the ejector star. The assembly numbers on the crane and crane recess match. Bore and chambers are good, the screws are unbuggered, and the bore and chambers are perfect.

Unfortunately, original grips are gone, replaced by smooth targets with S&W emblems ( I am not too sure they are really S&W grips), so I have to hunt down some correct grips.

I am guessing this was shipped somewhere between 1949 and 1952, but that is a guess and I would welcome a better estimate.

I am sure I payed more than the going value, but its the first 5 inch M&P I have ever seen in person, and man these are nice guns!!

Great forum.

andy, you did well. as some like to say, "you never pay too much, you just pay it too soon". the 5" is one of my favorites. i have one that is an almost everytime to the range gun. to me they just point and balance very well. probably late 48 or early 49. if you plan to carry it, holsters are not real easy to find for the five inchers, but they are out there. enjoy it. look at the thread "show your M&Ps". lots of nice ones there. lee

Congrats on a nice revolver. The 5" is my favorite; I own several. I'm looking for one now like yours. The older M&Ps are superb shooters that won't break the bank if you find a really nice one.

For reference, C102xxx was from February, 1950. I have a 2" M&P snubby that wears that serial number. You'll love that 5" M&P.
