New Model #3 ?

I was looking at this NM #3 i have and noticed a couple anomalies that seem out of place. This gun was shipped to M.W. Robinson in December of 1879, serial number 46xx. This gun has the 1 9/16" cylinder and is chambered for the 44 Russian. I always understood the 1 9/16" cylinder was introduced with the Frontier model in 1885. This gun also has the long gear extractor system commonly found on early NM#3's. Does this mean the "long strap" NM#3's were being produced before the Frontier model was introduce? What am I not seeing here?

Bruce,
You have been collecting a lot longer than me. Are you sure it has the 1 9/16" cylinder, measuring the cylinder only? I have never seen a long ejector housing gun that has the longer cylinder. The cylinder looks square to me in the picture, like a gun with the 1 7/16" cylinder. The flutes look shorter too, like a 1 7/16" cylinder. What does the barrel stamping look like?

I have to correct myself and my earlier post. Anyway, The OP's revolver
is not a long cylinder or a "Frontier" model. There is a way to tell long from
short cylinders.

Look were the flute ends. If it is a short cylinder, the flute goes past the
start of the stop notched.



Notice the line cuts across the flute.

The long cylinder, the cylinder flute ends before the stop notches.



Now, here is the OP's cylinder.



The OP's revolver does have the short cylinder.
