New Owner of Model 1000 20ga

I just acquired my fathers old 20ga from my aunt. This is my first shotgun and do not know much about them. How do I find out what version it is? It seems to be in good condition but I am sure it needs to be cleaned.
Any help from you guys is much appreciated

I worked in a sporting good store while I was in college. We sold lots of S&W long guns, model 1000 & 3000 shotguns, and model 1500 bolt action rifles. The model 1000 was a favorite and a great bird hunting gun. I always thought of them as an improved rem 1100.
