So I picked up a 28-2 in a trade today (28-2 and 360 bucks for an HK45). Its a six inch barrel, with original grips, bluing is thin but not too bad, marked "Washington State Patrol". But my question lies with the serial number.

First, I looked up a few of these and noticed they have S and N models, with normally six numbers following. This one is marked N18XX... It only has 4 numbers. I have quite a few smiths, but I am no expert by any means. But I really haven't seen one with this low of a serial number....

I believe the N serial number range started at N1, so while it is a low number, it is not unusual.

It is probably an "optical illusion" brought about by the angle of the photo, but it looks like the barrel rib and front sight ramp are set back from the end of the barrel.

If the rib and ramp are set back, it would not just be an unusual serial number, as I only know one type of barrel that had the rib and front sight ramp set back from the end of the barrel.

haha, that's an illusion. Even tho that would be nice to have some rare special edition Washington police revolver that I can retire on.

But alas, its not. It will go well with the current 19-4, 59 no dash, 66-4, 1917 45acp, model 36, Top Break 38 S&W, and trr8 that's on its way. One of them as to go tho, but I don't know which one.

Gotta love old State Police/Highway Patrol guns.
