I have bought and sold guns for decades. Retirement seemed far away. Now I am looking at it face to face. I just completed the collection of the firearms that I wanted. I have saved for retirement and have a nice sized amount. However, I need to learn to live off less. So, I have decided I have purchased my last firearm. I will continue to come to this forum and share and look at your firearms and share mine. BUT, no more spending. Anyone else in this spot?
 
This sounds like my story also, along with some of my friends. I've sold knives, guns, books, all kinds of stuff. I have just started selling the S&W belt buckle collection, with about 40 to go. At age 66 and moving in the next couple of years, I'm making my life and moving easier, now. I was not going to get any more guns either, but I did make a trade last month. A Colt Match Target, I just had to have, had to own, had to fondle, had to drool over!!!! But no more new guns, I'm positive this time! Mikey
 
Best wishes to you on your upcoming retirement. I've been retired for 3 years and never looked back. I'm probably in a similar situation to you as far as my collection, but I don't think you can ever say never. Use the time after you retire to really enjoy what you have now.

I've scaled back considerably my firearm purchases (I'm more likely to buy more ammo to shoot) ....... but, I still will buy a gun if it upgrades something I already have. I get the upgrade and then sell the one it replaced, that way the number of guns stays the same but the quality improves.

A story of woe.. In 95 my wife asked me to retire to take care of her father. She was oil..he was water...well you get it. Told me she would continue to work and keep me in the manner to which I would enjoy. Took care of him for 7 yrs..He died at just 101 . Well she continued to work and keep me in the manner to which I had come to enjoy. She came home from work(Emergency Room Nurse) and the scum sucking pig told me she was going to quit. I said what!! How about the deal we made...She said sorry for your luck. So to get even, every other month, I use her retirement accounts to buy another gun. She on the other hand is Non Repentant and won't let me make it one gun every month. Last gun I bought she made me give to her(she says our) daughter! Terrible cross to bear. So NO I ain't gonna stop
 
Well, I have thought about, but there are still a few I want. If I have the cash and find a real bargain, I'll probably buy it.

That said, I went to a local swap meet Saturday and saw a few guns that were interesting. Prices were decent, but I just didn't NEED them.
 
For the last few years, I stopped buying guns with my earnings and only buy with Casino or Lottery Winnings.
Last 12 months my winnings and trading history:
Model 27 NIB found at pawn shop, traded it for a brand new 686p 6" and a 686-1 4" , both I still have.
A brand new Colt competition 1911 I still have.
A 629 3" talo, brand new, already traded off.
A brand new Glock 48
A like NIB 19-4 6" in Nickel, still have but will sell or trade for 629 4" or a .357 snub when right one comes along.
And my CZ 455 American.
Oh, and a Marlin 1894 in 44 mag that I put a cool scout scope on, and I picked up Colts new midlegth gas system upper with centurian hand guard for my 6920.
Not bad for no money out of pocket, heh?
 
I was in that boat. I retired from the Postal Service after a torn rotator cuff repair that the Doctor said he would not be able to fix again if I messed it up again. Saved enough to be comfortable but not reckless. After a couple of months I was bored to tears and happened to meet a man that owned a pawn shop and was looking for someone to handle the guns. Now I get to buy and sell with somebody else's money and every now and then one comes along that I want. I have to say I'm as happy as I've ever been, and my wife likes it too. I think I was beginning to get on her nerves.

I'm in exactly the same spot. Wife's recent illness enlightened me to get things in order like SS and 401K so I'm a month or two away from making it official. I've said before that I don't need any more firearms so now I'm looking at a retirement/range gun to be my last. Any after that will not happen unless I sell something. I took early retirement at age 52 from my technician job of 27 years but I worked 2 part-time jobs since and I'm now 62, ready, and looking forward to retirement. I tell my wife that it's a sorry woman that can't support one man and 2 bird dogs.:D Larry
 
Just because you retire from the rat race, doesn't mean you can't work an occasional small job or a seasonal job. When I was newly married I would walk to the ball diamonds next door and collect the soda cans for about $15 a month. That all went to gun shows, every other month.

A friend of mine drives cars for a used car lot (to and from the car auction) one day a week. That money is what he uses to visit his kids and spoil his grandkids.

Wal-Mart is always looking for part time help, I know several guy that work one day a week. That kept my friend Willard shooting Skeet every Wednesday for years after he retired.

Every day you are busy, is a day you aren't bored, a day your aren't listening to your wife gab with or about "the girls", a day you feel like you have accomplished something (besides the laundry).

In good weather, I bike ride 20 or so miles twice or three times a week with the guys, go shooting with my brother once or twice a week, and try to have "work" (read that as "extra income") one or two half days a week. So my week turns out "Cash Neutral".

We are old dudes! We have experience, and we need guns! Therefore the work place would love to hire us, why? Because we can add and subtract, we can read labels, and most importantly: We actually show up!
