New Remington 870s

My only 870 is a 20" veteran of the Akron, Ohio Police Department. Someone set a policy that M-4's and M-16's were good for policing, but 870's were EVIL!

It resides in bedroom with a full tummy of 7 1/2's at 1425fps and waits patiently to be called upon in the middle of the night, when unwelcome guests kick the front door in!

(I swore, I'd never leave a gun with an empty chamber again, but the grandkids do wonder around the house at the Holidays.)

I do have a Sure Fire flash light mounted below the barrel, but I don't have to use it!

Video isn't from Scheels, though it was shot in one of their stores; it's from Gun News & Reviews (new to me so can't vouch, but seems all right).

Here are the videos, and Remington's reply:

Remington's explanation is plausible, but who knows. I'll judge the product when actual Police and Wingmaster models -- made by the new team -- hit the floor.

If we all demanded top quality from budget models and understood what it cost and were willing to pay for it, we'd get it...but we don't, so we won't.

In the meantime, if this means prices on used 870s stabilize or drop, and if there are new 870s in the pipeline worth a damn, I'm a happy guy. I'd like another one. If it ain't perfect, at least it's there and I can send it to Wilson or Vang Comp; if this means AI&P starts building customs again, all the better and problems solved.

Remington needs to develop a higher standard than the same as they produced prior to the reorganization. The 870 Express models have been notorious for ejection issues and It starts with rough chambers and crummy extractors. The fit and finish just doesn't compare to the older models at all. I think loyal Remington fans would gladly pay more for better quality.

My humble opinion is if you sell a product, make it the best you can. Customers see this and a positive reputation is developed. This will increase sales and make the company more profitable. The company also saves on the back end by not having to deal with recalls and all sorts of warranty and shipping costs.

Build **** and your reputation is shot and you have the expense of warranty and recall issues to deal with along with decreased sales.

The Rem stock holder board and overpaid CEO shouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure this one out!

Many people who buy firearms shoot a few rounds, if that, and call it good. A person who shoots a lot for any reason is actually an outlier, and most manufacturers will build to the first group, not second. Group 1 will not pay what group 2 will. AR platforms are a good example. Hardcore users buy certain makes because they shot a lot in training and have made serious use of the platform. When Pat Rogers was alive and I took a class or two a year, plus in-service and similar stuff, I put 4-5K rounds down range a year, and that is LOW compared to some. I did not bat an eye at a $2K platform plus $500-$1000 in accessories. For the crowd that might shoot 100 rounds and call that a test, almost anything will suffice.

This is true of a lot of things. I have broken a good bit of home exercise gear for the same basic reason. Most people use it a little and them convert it to a coat rack. They don't stress it, so the price point construction only rarely becomes an issue.

I got rid of most my 870's, as they rarely where fired. But last month I found a decent Express for $250. I promptly went to work with a hack saw & parts from the parts bin to make it a SD gun. I love tinkering with these more than shooting them. Sorry bird hunters.

I bought my 870 Express in April, 2006. Haven’t shot it a ton but never an issue. I could see myself buying a Police model when they come out if they have the same standards for the Police model now as they did 15 years ago.
