I'm here, you're not
I walked into Cabela's and saw no less than 9 of these in one case. I doubt that I've seen a dozen in my lifetime. I went through them and picked the nicest one and began the adoption process.
It's a Colt Shooting Master in 38 Special. These are made on the old New Service frame which moved into history on or about 1944.
This particular revolver was made in 1928 and from the looks of it appears to have not aged at all. It's seen use, but not much.
The grips are perfect and serial numbered to the gun.
Not only was it made in '28 but that's also the year my father was born.

Now if I can just find one in 44 Special and a Triple Lock Target in 44 to keep it company.

I traded a couple Sako rifles on it and a small amount of $. I didn't do too badly but they weren't quite giving it away.
They still have 8 more of them in 38 and a New Service Target in 45 Colt.

Thanks. I'm not thrilled with the caliber but it'll do.

Surely you jest! It is probably my most used cartridge. Definitely my most re-loaded. I can't swing a cat without hitting a 38 special around my house. That's all I have to say about that.

Very nice looking Colt!!
Gotta aggree with Wheelgun1958, though, you are kidding on that "not thrilled with the caliber but it'll do." Right? ;)
That is my most fired caliber also. Might that be because you have all those beautiful .45's? I'm just envious! :)

Nice find, Joni. You seldom see any of those anywhere, but a whole case full of them? They must have raided some old man's stash.

I'm surprised you passed on the New Service Target.

I've just been reading up on my Askin's books, he didn't like Smith's too much, but he loved his Colt's. The boy could shoot. Targets and other things, like people.

Lynnie, I didn't realize you were a caliber snob! :D

Seriously though -- nice find!! It's beautiful!

Great find! I've only run across a few of those in my whole life and none were that nice.
I would've been on that New Service Target in a heartbeat.

So what's your beef with the .38 Special? Don't tell me you're one of those buck and roar gals.

Okay, now I realize I should have explained myself better. I already have a bunch of nice 38 Special revolvers in J, K & N frames and in Colt's as well, even a few Colt Gold Cups in 38 Special MR.
My 2 holy grail guns would both be 44 Special and this one is so close. I'm almost tempted to buy another and have it converted since it would be cheaped than buying a New Service Target or Shooting Master 44 Special.
These came from a collection of 180 guns that Cabela's purchased.
I'm still thinking of looking at the 45 again.

I buy a lot of guns from Cabelas. Their used gun pricing defies logic. I sometimes walk in a real deal ($300 Colt Cobra blue like new, $400 Cobra nickle like new) There was a .22 Colt Trooper " I really wanted but I couldn't justify the asking price. Joni you have a really nice .38 there. .38 spec is my favorite caliber.

I know what you mean, they have two practically identical Officers Model target 38 special revolvers, one for $699 and one for $1499 and the one for $699 is in better shape.

Joni, very neat find and buy. Now you will have to get a fedora, leather flight jacket and whip to complete the ensemble. As you already know those old Colts are neat revolvers{ not as neat as the old N-frames} but plenty"cool" in their own right.

Surely you jest! It is probably my most used cartridge. Definitely my most re-loaded. I can't swing a cat without hitting a 38 special around my house. That's all I have to say about that.

If you own one revolver, it's probably a .38 special. If you own more than one revolver, at least one of them is surely a .38 special.
teesur.
