New Ruger SR22...maybe...eventually

I've had my eye on the SR22 for some time, as I want something to practice with more without breaking the bank. When I found a Target (4.5") model for an OK deal, I decided to go ahead and get it. Go to the gun store and do all of the paperwork (about 45 minutes away, but my LGS would only order it for another $35 or so). They tell me I'm delayed. First time in almost 30 years of buying guns that I have had that happen. Rather irritating. So I put it in layaway at the store and plan to go back next week to pick it up. The only potential upside will be if it goes on sale when their new flyer comes out, I was told they will honor the sale price.

I hate waiting...

My only Ruger .22 is a bull-barreled MK II auto pistol. I like it very much.

I liked the nice M-77-22 bolt action, but think CZ offers a better rifle for less money.

Had that SR22 for better than a year now and has been a very good gun. Shoots great with a decent trigger in SA. DA takes a pretty stout finger. Use it for small varmints around the house and is a great mole gun,,,, when the tunnel starts moving lead starts flying.

Mine has been great too. Had it about 2 years I guess. So far mine feeds everything reliably. I got that "delayed" notice once, about 20 years ago. They never did tell me why, but my LGS guy said that sometimes numbers get entered wrong, or my name could have been a middle initial off of a bad guy. It is frustrating, but that new 22 will smooth out the frustration. I didnt know if came with a longer barrel Target model SR22. Have to look that one up.

Before I bought a 22 semi I rented A Ruger SR22 and a M&P 22 Compact at the range. I put 100 rounds of CCI RN through each one. As I left the range I went into the store an bought 22 Compact. Prices were very close but the ergonomicsmof the M&P won the decision. Have put more than 1500 rounds through the gun (all CCI) without a hiccup.

Yeah...I'm not sure why the delay. About 20 years ago I had a problem with a mortgage because another guy with the same name hadn't paid his taxes on a taco stand. Probably something random like that.

I had my eye out on the SR22 for some time. I've always liked Rugers and this one really fit my hand and pointed very well. Once I found the longer barrel, I was sold. It seems to point a little better, and I think the longer site radius will really help.

Once I pick it up, I plan to hit the range and see how it feeds different ammo brands and how true the sites are from the factory. I'll report back once I get a little time with it.

It is not picky about ammo. Really like the interchangeable grips and the changeable floor plate on the magazines. The safety is also the de-cocker.

Found an Uncle Mikes pancake holster at a surplus store for it. Makes a good little trail gun.

Ruger

I bought the Walther P22 when it first came out maybe 10 years ago. It is very similar to the Ruger.

I like it very much. I've owned Walther PPKs, several Berettas md 70 & md 84s too.

I think the P22 is the perfect weight, size, & ammo capacity. It makes a great kit gun for a hike, fishing trip, or even a trip to the grocery store.

I'm glad to see other manufacters make a similar gun. I do not think you can go wrong with one.

I do like the Walther. My dad has one. However, it does seem to be a little picky about ammo. From what I've read, the Ruger seems less picky. I do agree that both models seem like good all around guns for the trail, range, etc.

I was wondering about a holster. Was it specific to the model, or just a generic size that happened to fit?

Generic size that just happen to fit. I bought a leather pancake style holster from an outfit out of Florida for it but never use it. Like the uncle Mike's.

The Ruger rep said it would but just don't feed it a steady diet of Stingers. The last time I carried it up in the woods on a fishing trip I had it loaded with stinger hollow points.

Glad you asked. I got my CCI Ammo mixed up in previous post. I meant Velocitors and not Stingers. Probably due to the higher velocity.

CCI Mini Mags are 1235 Feet per second (FPS)
CCI Velocitors are 1435 FPS
CCI Stingers are 1640 FPS

I had asked "Will it be ok to shoot CCI velocitor throught it occassionally"

Quoting the Ruger response. "If it is 1400 FPS then we would not reccomend using it as a steady diet"

I believe the Stingers have a longer shell casing. My M&P 15-22 will shoot the Stingers according to the manual.

That makes sense. For a plinking gun, I usually shoot whatever is cheapest and will reliably feed. Typically, CCI doesn't meet the cheapest criteria

I bought a very lightly used SR22 from a friend a few years ago. I bought extra magazines and shot the gun in Steel Challenge matches a few times. The seller saw me shoot and said: Had I known it was so accurate I wouldn't have sold it! The DA trigger is not bad and gets better with use. If you are NOT a double action shooter, don't buy this type of gun. I sold the SR22 for more than I paid and bought the S&W M&P 22 Compact. It's a little bigger than SR 22 and gobbles any ammo I have fed it.

Today was a good day.

I picked the Ruger up today and the store had a customer appreciation sale. 10% off, so I was able to pick up some ammo and another AR magazine (also on sale 30% off).

I cleaned it right away (fairly dirty from the factory, but not terrible) and then I took it to the range and fired 200 rounds. 150 CCI (Mini Mag and standard velocity lead RN). No issues at all. In 50 rounds of Federal lead RN, I had 1 FTE and 4-5 FTF. I guess we'll leave Federal off of the list for it. Took some time to dial in the sites. They were WAY off from the factory. I think I have it mostly dialed in, but still not exactly where I want it to be. I'll play with them more later.

I brought my old S&W 422 for comparison (plain jane fixed site model). It was interesting that while it is not overly accurate at any type of distance (I have a hard time seeing the sites that well), it shoots really well. Recoil is much less (all steel...go figure), but the trigger, including the reset, is significantly better. And I don't think the Ruger is terrible.

Overall, I'm happy with my purchase and am really glad I got the 4.5" barrel, as I think it points better for me, feels more balances, and has a better site radius.

If you're looking for a nice little plinker, I don't think you'll go wrong.
