This past summer I had my eye set on a Model 629 in .44 mag at a local outdoor store. Finally got my money together and went up there and it was gone. I think they had it marked at $600 or $650. Anyways, I was kinda bummed so I kept my eyes open for a little and then stopped looking. The other day at the same facility I found another 629 in .44 mag. Looked it over and it looked nice. I noticed the grips didnt look like the ones I normally see, so I assumed it had them put on aftermarket. I was used to seeing rubber finger grips, these were smooth rubber grips. Well I got home and started digging yest. and was trying to look up the serial number: N708XXX. I couldnt find it anywhere, it was showing that it was not even made????? Well right at 8am I called Smith and Wesson this morning, and I took the grip off. Well the serial number under the grip is N780XXX. SO from the factory the serial number was stamped correct on the butt, but incorrect inside the cylinder well. They just swapped the 8 and 0, which I thought was funny that they would mess this up.

Also after some reading(I am still learning the entire dash thing, 629-2, 3, 4 etc.) My gun just says MOD 629, no dash no nothing. So while on the phone with S&W I found out my gun was produced June 20, 1980 and was the run of 1,133. The grips are rubber, they say- Presentation Grip by Pachmayp. So anyone know what she might be worth? I assume not much more then I paid, but like I said, still learning the about all the ins and outs of the S&W talk etc. Lock or unlock etc. Oh yeah, I paid $400 plus taxes, did not have the original box or papers.

Also, I believe from some searching the factory grips would be checked, target type made of Goncalo alves with the extraction relief area on the left panel. THis is some info. I got from someone else. So as I said, I am still learning the S&W revolver thing. I am not new to guns, just first time with one of these. Does anyone have pics of what the factory grip would look like. What does the extraction relief area look like on the left? I want to find some stock grips, and I seen a bunch for sale, but not sure which is correct or not. Thanks everyone!

Well, it was $400, but I had a coupon. I will say I got it from Cabelas. It really suprised me. They had the gun marked at $500 and I had a coupon if I spent $500 I would get $100 off, so I got it for $400 plus taxes. But suprised me they would sell a semi rear gun at that price, but I guess they get so many guns in and out? Plus maybe the rubber grips through them off, or the fact that the serial number in the cylinder well was wrong? Not sure, but I am very happy with my find, and I want to restore this baby and cherish it!

Oh yeah, I know that is recessed (bullet sitting flush in the cylinder) what is pinned? I forgot what I read about pinned. Thanks

Welcome...congrats.
You need to score the right stocks
and a P/case would be neat.
Nice gun...
I'll be back at my shop over the weekend
I'll see what I can find...I Think I have
both and the price will be right.
Email in my profile..if interested..that gun needs to brought up to speed..again nice find.

PSU-Hunter, that is one neat piece and an even neater price. Congratulations. I have pretty much the same gun, but in the more recent dash-6 version. In gross terms that means round butt instead of square, and of course "improved" by the fabled internal lock. Your barrel may be a half inch longer as well. I don't recall if they were doing 6" or 6.5" barrels at the time yours was made.

"Pinned" refers to the pin that keeps the barrel from unscrewing. You can see it in the frame at the top just in front of the cylinder window.

Thanks guys. Got the pinned now! Yes barrel is 6", measured it when I got it.

Xfuzz I will email you!

Another question, I notice when some people explain a gun they mention that the rear sight has the white out-line, does that signify anything at all?

Yeah mine also has the white outline and I was just curious if that ment anything dif. then a normal gun? Like did the factory do some and not others?

The factory did do some and not others, just depends. I believe all 629 no dashers had the RR & WO (red ramp front sight, white outline rear sight). Its when you get up into the higher dash #s (of 629s) that they didn't. For example, I have a 629-2 4" "Mountain Revolver" made in 1989 that did NOT have the white outline rear sight, or red ramp front sight. That's just the way they came!
