I don't know how new it is, but it sounds like what I'm looking for in a J-frame. Saw S&W 642 2.5 inch barrel and a pinned front sight. Looks like a 640 with a 2.5 inch barrel and chambered in 38. Anyone have one, or anyone have any thoughts?

Great gun I've put ~200 through her with no problems

I'm assuming this pic off the S&W WS is what you refer to. Lot of variations on the J frame theme I've never seen before. IMO a Centennial style pistol is meant to be a pocket gun. The additional 5/8" barrel length doesn't sound like much, and I'm sure proponents of extra sight radius, and extractor length will love the new additions to the line. To me though I don't like J frames with over 1 7/8" barrel unless your intention is to holster it. I notice "no lock" models actually advertised. They must be selling a lot of J frame LW's. I'm sure plenty of people will say 2 1/2" is greatest thing since sliced bread, it's just not for me.

My wife carries a 642 with the 1 7/8-inch barrel, but I may have gotten her the new one with the 2 1/2-inch if it had been available. I like the look of the slightly longer barrel and would love to shoot one.

JcMack,

Thanks. That is the one I was talking about. I'm sure you are right about shorter barrels for pocket carry. Just need deeper pockets...

Have the 2.5 inch barreled models already been dropped that fast?
