'Chief's Special' in stainless...

Model 60
Hand Ejector
SS
Serial # R84736

Ship Date?
(I'm guessing 1965)

It was my Uncle's who was a trooper & later a Detective for the
KY State Police.

Ty

'R' serial prefix commenced in 1969.

Is 'Kentucky State Police' on sideplate? If so, they were manufactured in 1985.

Sorry, but I don't have anything further for you at this time.

My sole source is the 3rd edition (©2006) , Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, Supica & Nahas.

Nope, no KSP on the side plate. There is a number stamped by their armorer on the frame above the trigger. Rather a long number and not lined up very well.

1969 it is.

Thanks,

Ty

I think if you desire more detailed information that you should contact S&W. In the past, they'd research gun for a fee and write a letter representing its date of manufacture.

1969 was the date the R prefix started. Your gun may be indeed have been manufactured at a later date. I would gather that the owner of this firearm, your uncle, may have passed on, otherwise you'd not be asking.

Yes, my Uncle passed away about 10 years ago.
I just acquired it, & paid $0.00 for the little gem.
(Thanks Dad!)

I will contact S&W for history.
There is a small "X" on the bottom of one of the grips.
I sometimes wonder if that is a "notch"?

Thanks to all for the input!

Ty
