New Scope!

I don't understand the comparison between .22 LR and .223/5.56. Two different rounds for two basically different purposes, IMHO.
My comparison is dealing with using such a scope as the OP has purchased. My basic point is a 22lr is not a long range round, for multiple reasons. I was just trying to figure out the usage for such magnification with a short range round used in an inherently inaccurate gun... relatively speaking.

Sounds like you are bored again and need an argument to liven up your life today. :D
Well, I am of German heritage & love a good discussion/argument. And I do apologize to the OP for saying so much & hope to not pollute his thread any more. However, I genuinely don't understand the shooting that so many here do. I wish, maybe in another thread, someone can walk me thru a normal shooting experience at a range. Are all shots from the rest position or freehand? Are you training for a purpose or just enjoying shooting a gun? Do you do timed drills or shoot multiple targets? What is normal for range shooters is maybe foreign to country shooting/hunting.

It's a common fallacy to think that scopes are only for long range (over 100 yards) shooting. I haven't used iron sights on any rifle for years, whether on my several .22s, my Mini14 or my Remington 700. And I challenge the assertion that the 15-22 is inherently inaccurate. It's as accurate as just about any out-of-the-box AR. The military standard for them is 3 MOA, and the typical 15-22 does that, too. The average semi-auto .22 LR runs 2-3 MOA.

I shoot at a 100 yard range. I sight in at 50 yards on paper and the rest of my shooting is at 50-100 yards at tin cans, bottles, bars of soap and other reactive targets. I shoot at clay birds at 100 yards and break 95 percent on the first shot. I shoot both from a bench and offhand, depending upon the mood. I am not shooting for training, I just enjoy blowing up small targets and making tin cans bounce. The only matches I shoot now are steel plates. If you want a challenge, fill five soda cans with dirt, stack them one on top of the other and then shoot the bottom can and hit the others before they can hit the ground. :)

I'm sighted in at 50yrds on paper and all my shooting is between 50 and 100yrds. Targets are paper, cans, 3 to 6 inch steel plates,
small water bottles with colored water, etc., all set at different yardages. I run a Primary Arms 1-4x scope just to help my old eyes see the targets better. I'm actually leaning towards getting a 3-9x scope.

I have the same 3-12x44 UTG scope. As said above, I wanted it mainly so I can see my shots hit the target, especially at 100yds. I also have a TRS-25 red dot for shorter distances. I'd love to shoot more than paper, but that's all my local range allows. Occasionally I can get out to the desert for more variety :).

This is a nice one. Both my grandson and I have them on our 15-22s.

I live in the country and shoot in the country. I purchased a scope like this to push this gun to the limits and see what it can do. I mainly shoot at 30 yards with a red dot but I cannot shoot accurately with a red dot at 50+ yards. I want to be able to see my shot placement without walking to the paper or using a pair of binoculars. I can't afford to shoot .223/5.56 for fun so this is my option. I wanted a tactical rifle, yes for the cool factor, but I did not buy no cheap *** Mossberg. does that answer your questions redneck jim?;)

Sure, your answer helps as does the others. I think it interesting to learn how others shoot. I had no clue a range would allow you to shoot cans on the ground or all that other stuff. I am really surprised at how many use it as a spotting scope.

Jim, it all depends upon the range. At mine you can shoot at reactive targets on the ground as long as they are at least at or past the 25-yard marker.

My range is 100 yds but only allows paper so I have no choice but to shoot at bullseyes the whole time and since its the only outdoor range in the area and if its crowded, we only have an hour limit on the lane. Basically, you might have 2-3 breaks for target changes and that's it. It sucks but you do whatcha gotta do to enjoy this hobby!!

Funny, most of my life folks made fun of my being from Mississippi. We deservedly are the butts of many a joke. However, in many ways it is a paradise. We are very conservative, almost all politicians love and shoot guns, plus we have ample space to hunt & recreationally shoot. Now I can laugh, or feel sorry, for those of you living in the unfree part of the US. We may be fat & stupid down here but we love our freedom.

Yep, I hear ya. I'm in West Texas. Plenty of open desert to shoot my guns, ride my dirtbike, etc. No rules or restrictions or crowds here. :D

RNJ,
Like you, I use my 15-22 as an economical trainer for the AR-15 I use for 3 gun competition. I have them both set up as similar as possible. Same Magpul stocks, same Troy VTAC 13" freefloat forearms, same Burris MTAC 1X24 scopes, same ERGO grip.... You get the idea. I want them to look, feel & function the same.
