So I just got a new .40 Shield. Unfortunately I've been too busy to shoot it yet, but I have a box of 100 rds of Federal for target shooting and I got a box of Hornady Critical Defense for my carry.

I love the gun so far, feels great seems very easy to use and operate, very excited to take it to the range.

My only worry is the amount of catastrophic failures I've heard about with the .40 shield. I guess I'm just being a worry wart, but those who own this weapon, is this really something to be scared of? Thanks!

I've had my Shield 40 since the middle of Jan., and love it. I have only put about 190 rounds of 165 gr ammo through it. Around 150 has been Freedom reman, and the rest a mixture of Critical Defense and Speer Gold Dot, without one failure of any kind.

NO!
Just use high quality ammo. Federal, Winchester, Hornady, Remington and the like. Don't use refurbished or cheap ammo. You get what you pay for.
Be sure to clean off the factory lubes and give it a light coating of your favorite gun lube before you fist shoot it.
You'll love your Shield and heaven forbid if you ever need it for defense, it'll do the job.

I've had my .40 Shield since the day they came out. However, i dont worry about catastrophic failure. Because I never expect anything mechanical to be perfect and not subject to failure.

If i was scared my Shield would blow up. I'd go back to throwing rocks at the bad guys.

There is nothing to be scared of when you own a Shield 40, be it failure or bad guy. I shoot PMC Bronze and PDX1 in mine with nary a hiccup.

If you're that paranoid then sell it and get something else...I'll give you $200 for it...

Forget about the failures. Use commercial manufactured ammunition. Unless you load your own ammo, do not use reloaded. My Shield 40 will be 2 years old in May. No problems and I do shoot many rounds of high power CorBon JHP ammo, as this is my carry ammo. I shoot it to keep me prepared if I ever have a SD situation, and need to know how the gun reacts. I have close to 2 thousand rounds total, down range, and it keeps working and working. Mostly standard power FMJ ammo, and about 150 rounds of the high powered CorBon. There is no +P 40 ammo, but if there was, then it would be equivalent to the CorBon (135gr JHP 1325 fps and 526 ft pounds of energy).
