New Sport II...what scope mount?

Hi folks, just purchased new Sport II...what an awesome rifle...put about 500 rounds through it so far and not one failure...absolutely loving this amazing AR! I do have a question...I just purchased a UTG 3-9 Bugbuster and bought a set of "UTG Hi" mount rings but the scope is still too low to clear the stock rear Magpul folding sight (and I think too low for my normal eye level on the stock).

First is there an ideal/average height for the scope above the rail to get a comfortable height for best vision?

Second, what are you guys using to get to a good height? Rail risers? Just a very tall ring?

Sorry can't help. My magnified scoped rifles are not SD ready so I don't have BUIS on them and don't have issues with clearance.
 
Rule of thumb is that the center of a scope should be about 1.5" above the rail. Iron sights are about 2.6" above the center of the bore.

You will never get a scope high enough to mount over BUIS sights and be able to use the scope. Ideally, the cross hairs will be on the top aiming point of your irons. Turn the scope up over 4x and you will never see the front sight.

What you will want is a cantilever scope mount that will mount the scope far enough forward that you can easily access the charging handle. The ocular of your scope will be just about even with the rear of your receiver. I've never found a set-up that allows you to use both irons and a scope without removing the scope. There are plenty of quality mounts that are easily removable.
 
Call LaRue Tactical. Maybe they can help. Measure the height of your FOLDED DOWN rear sight, first.
 
When I had the Nikon P223 3-9x40 scope with the P223 mounts, the scope cleared the rear folding sight. As far as what is comfortable height or getting a good cheek weld, that's going to be dependent on your facial structure I think.
 
I went with the BURRIS 410344 AR-PEPR QD SCOPE MOUNT and it clears my BUIS sight no problem. However, it's mounted as far back as possible with the scope mount far forward. It puts the scope at true co-witness which works for me. On my Magpul Mid, I have the Burris, followed by a rail mount for a brass catcher and then the rear fold down sight. Tight but works. Just recently removed the QD scope for a TruDot RDS. The magic of QD mounts :)

Unless you are using quality, quick detach mounts, I wouldn't worry about keeping the MBUS on the rifle. You can't use the sights with the scope mounted, so why even have them on there?
 
Good suggestions and thank you...agree there is no reason to keep rear sight on the rifle while using scope.
 
Forgot to add, use one of the mounts made specifically for the AR, such as the Nikon P223 or Burris PEPR as suggested. These will put the scope at the right height.
 
I use carry handle sights as backup but of course don't leave them on the rifle when using a scope.

I've found that the inexpensive 1" riser blocks that sell for $15 allow me to use my choice of standard Weaver scope mounts. Not the most tacticool looking, but that's not a priority to me at all.

The proper ring height is one inch tall. That's measured from the base to the bottom of the ring.

The reason folks are saying to get a one piece cantilever mount designed for an AR platform is to push the scope out further than the rifle's receiver would allow the forward scope ring to be positioned.

This is one of my rifles with a PEPR mentioned earlier. Notice that the forward ring is well beyond the receiver, but the entire mount is attached only to the receiver.

Your other concern was the scope clearing the MBUS rear sight. I'm guessing that means folded down because you'll never be able to clear it in the up position. I don't know anything about a babbybuggy scope, but the eyepiece in the below pic is 1.656 inch OD. There's still plenty of clearance with the rear MBUS. And that's a GEN1 MBUS rear sight. GEN2 are lower profile.

Scope mounting with rear fold down

I have the Sport II and I just remove the rear sight and it works fine. It's mounted on a rail and just have to unclip it.

A. Ideal height will vary from one person to the next. If yours isn't high enough, try something higher.

B. I use high Weaver rings. Might work for me, but not for you or anyone else.

You co-witness a scope or are you saying it shares a common ocular height with your hard sight?
