Pick up a huge variety of stuff today ! 35 handguns. Several vintage S&W's . Here's one I have never seen before. A note in the box identified it as a top brake single shot prototype target pistol.

I don't think what you found is what you think it is. Easy way to find out is a S&W Letter. Or you could join the S&W Collectors Association and try getting a "born on" date from Roy.

I really don't know what to think it is !! There are more than a few in this batch that I am not familiar with.. Need a local expert !

The experts are here on the Forum if you can post the right pics

Prototype?

That barrel is very interesting. Can you take some better photos of any markings on the single shot barrel? Also what caliber is it?
38?
I’m seeing what might be a two piece barrel. See photo 1
Can you confirm that is a line on the barrel?

This may be a prototype target barrel. I have always suspected the earliest target barrels were two piece. This barrel might support that position.

We are going to need to see several more close up photos of that barrel.
The top of the rib any markings
The latch any markings
The breach open with the ejector out.
Also a photo of the rifling and chamber.

Notice photo two? That line? Does yours have that line?

If it does it’s most definitely a Smith & Wesson early two piece barrel. That would be an exciting discovery!

it is a .22 cal. I don't remember seeing any seams on the barrel but will take a better look later this morning.

Interesting revolver with a single shot barrel

You have a heavily modified 38 double action 3rd model revolver frame. The single shot barrels fit these frames with very little, or no modifications. If the barrel and latch have a serial number on them, they probably came from an original single shot pistol. A person could buy just a barrel from the factory or a distributor and put it on a single action frame or a double action frame. I they bought just the barrel it probably does not have a serial number on it.

Hopkins & Allen

Well,
I was hoping it was a 38 cal barrel.

I suspect this barrel is actually a HOPKINS AND ALLEN early target barrel heavily modified circa about 1910 to 1914.

Hopkins and Allen single shot target barrels came as long as 18” and the 22 cal did actually screw into the lug. So there should be a line there.

The owner could actually change barrel lengths by unscrewing one and screwing in another length. The barrel marking was likely covered with the modification but a photo of the rear latch would pretty much confirm a Hopkins and Allen barrel.

Might be an early variation.

So it’s not a S&W prototype. It’s more likely a modified put together.

I have an H&A long barreled target I haven't gotten to yet.
