I need an ankle holster for a S&W model 640 in .38 Special. This will be my first ankle holster and know little about them.

This will be for both on and off duty. Will I need two; with one designed to lace up with a boot? I wear either Danner Acadias of Packers by White's.

I enjoy quality gun leather and don't mind paying for quality work and waiting.

I've looked at Kramer and Tauris Holsters so far.

Thanks!

I really like my Galco Ankle Glove.
It's comfortable & keeps the gun secure.

While I have a Galco "Boot Extender" for the Ankle Glove I
haven't used it yet so can't vouch for how well it works.

I have no experience with other brands but I've been using a Galco Ankle Glove over my lace up boots for almost 12 years. Originally with a Glock 27 but I've been carry a 642 for about the last 5-6 years. In each case it has carried the gun securely and comfortably. It's remained in placed through foot pursuits, fights, fence climbing etc...

If you haven't used an ankle holster before, it will take about a week to become accustomed to the extra weight on one leg. After a while though you won't even notice it.

Ive been carrying a Colt Cobra in a Ankle holster. Its a Renegade, its so comfortable you can forget its on. I have worn it with shoes, hiking shoes and 6" tall boots.

Forum poster Sipowitz speaks highly of this and turned me on to it.

Edit... When wearing low shoes I keep it slightly rotated gun rearward. This is so the barrel does not hit my ankle bone. Ouch....

I'm another Ankle Glove user. Very comfortable and secure. Forget it's there.

+1000 for the Galco Ankle Glove. Pretty expensive, but I've worn it just about every day for the past 8 years. I wear Acadias at work, and the Danner Rats in the picture on my off days. I didn't need an extender, and it stays secure during foot chases (although I'm old and don't do much of that anymore).

Galco Ankle Glove as well. And I think the extra $$ for the garter is well worth the added security.

Another vote for the ankle glove. I've carried my 638 in it for several years. You can purchase an optional calf strap. I don't have any experience with this though. The ankle glove also has a screw to adjust retention.

Uncle Mikes

After owning and using several DeSantis rigs, I switched to Uncle Mikes for my Kahr P9. The holster is contoured to fit the natural leg taper at the ankle. It's comfortable, doesn't swish around when you walk and the gun is securely fastened. Best of all, it's reasonably priced.

You can't go wrong with either the renegade or the Galco..my partner has the Galco and I tried it...works great and very comfortable...but I went with the renegade because I wear straight leg jeans and the soft leather pouch is slightly more concealable than the hard molded Galco.
